Mohali, Aug 22: The Punjabi film industry plunged into mourning on Friday morning with the demise of veteran comedian-actor Jaswinder Bhalla, popularly known as Chacha Chatra. The 65-year-old actor breathed his last in Mohali, leaving behind an unparalleled legacy in Punjabi cinema and theatre.
Bhalla, who suffered a brain stroke on Wednesday evening, was admitted to Fortis Hospital, Mohali, but despite immediate medical attention, he could not recover. The tragic news was confirmed by his close friend and fellow Chhankata performer, Balmukund Sharma.
Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann expressed deep sorrow, recalling Bhalla’s unmatched contribution to Punjabi humour. “The sudden departure of Jaswinder Bhalla Ji is extremely sorrowful. The heart is saddened by the silence of the jingle of Chhankatian. May Waheguru grant him a place at His feet. Chacha Chatra will always reside in our hearts,” he posted on X.
Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) President Sukhbir Singh Badal also remembered the late actor with heartfelt words. “With his exceptional artistry, he ruled the hearts of Punjabis. In this fast-paced life, Bhalla Ji brought smiles to countless faces. May Guru Sahib bless his soul and give strength to the bereaved family and his admirers,” he stated.
Over the years, Jaswinder Bhalla earned immense respect and love for his versatility, wit, and comic timing. From stage performances in Chhankata to unforgettable roles in Punjabi films, he became a household name, spreading joy across generations.
His last rites will be held on Saturday, August 23, at noon at Balongi cremation ground, Mohali, where family, friends, and admirers will gather to bid a final farewell.
