New Delhi, Aug 16: Those seemingly minor aches—neck stiffness, shoulder discomfort, leg cramps, or jaw pain—could sometimes be warning signs of serious health conditions. Experts say paying attention to these symptoms early can help prevent complications.
Shoulder pain: Often dismissed as muscle strain, persistent shoulder pain in one or both shoulders could be linked to heart disease. A 2016 study highlighted connections between shoulder problems and heart risk factors such as high blood pressure, cholesterol, and diabetes. Experts advise seeking medical attention if shoulder pain does not improve in a few days.
Jaw pain: Particularly on the left side, jaw pain can be an early sign of a heart attack. The pain may radiate from the chest to the jaw, neck, back, or arms. Women are more likely to experience this symptom, and immediate medical attention is recommended if other signs of cardiac distress appear.
Left arm discomfort: A dull ache or heaviness in the left arm may indicate cardiac stress or compromised oxygen supply to the heart. If accompanied by chest pain, numbness, or sweating, it could be a heart attack—emergency care should be sought immediately.
Leg cramps at night: Nighttime leg cramps could point to poor circulation, often associated with peripheral artery disease (PAD), which reduces blood flow to the limbs. Frequent cramps should prompt a consultation with a healthcare professional.
Neck stiffness: Stiffness in the neck, especially when touching the chin to the chest causes pain, may indicate brain infections such as meningitis. This is a medical emergency and requires prompt treatment.
