Mangaluru, Aug 15: St Aloysius Pre-University College celebrated the 79th Independence Day with great patriotism and fervour. Capt (Retd) L B Kamath, a decorated naval officer with over 33 years of distinguished service graced the occasion as the Chief Guest and hoisted the National Flag, accompanied by the singing of the National Anthem.
The formal programme began with a prayer led by the ‘Shastriya Sangeetha Club’, followed by a warm welcome to the dignitaries.
Student council president Abhiram Muralidhar reflected on India’s journey from post-independence struggles to global aspirations, acknowledging the sacrifices of leaders and soldiers while urging action against persistent inequalities.
Niha Fahim, lecturer department of chemistry, sharing her thoughts on the day emphasised that true independence lies in discernment, compassion and standing with the marginalised, calling on youth to become change-makers committed to the greater good.
Chief guest, Capt Kamath, in his address spoke on the nation’s advancements in electronic warfare. He explained the importance of everyone's contribution to strengthen revenue, and the need for ‘Atmanirbhar Bharat’ and ‘Swadeshi’ initiatives to boost economic self-reliance. He urged the youth to take an active role in empowering the nation.
The celebration also honoured the winners of various competitions held to mark Independence Day. Capt Kamath, along with Preity Kamath, who was also present for the occasion, presented the prizes. The formal programme was followed by a cultural segment, which included a medley of patriotic songs by the college choir, a short drama on the responsibilities of freedom, and a vibrant dance performance showcasing the nation’s cultural diversity.
The principal, Fr Clifford Sequeira SJ, campus minister, Fr Antony Derrick SJ; vice principals Muralikrishna G M and Vilma Fernandes; deans Kiran Shetty and Inas Dias; vice president of the PTA executive committee, Dr Bhavana Karkera and members of the students’ council were present on the dais.
