Mangaluru, Aug 15: Carmel School, Kotekar, celebrated the 79th Independence Day on August 15 with grandeur, patriotic fervour, and a deep sense of national pride. The day’s celebrations were graced by Roy Castelino, PRO of the diocese of Mangalore and proprietor of Roy Constructions, Mangaluru.
The occasion was further elevated by the presence of Sr Pramila, principal; Sr Julie Ann, administrator; Sr Juliana Mary, joint secretary; Sr Maria Sheetal AC, headmistress of Stella Maris; Sr Anitha, vice principal; Sudheer, PTA vice president; and Veekshitha, PTA coordinator.

The dignitaries were ceremoniously escorted to the venue with a guard of honour presented by the school band, whose stirring beats filled the air with patriotic pride. This was followed by the unfurling of the National Flag by the chief guest, Roy Castelino, a moment of pride and reverence accompanied by the heartfelt singing of the National Anthem by the entire gathering.
The formal programme commenced in the school auditorium with a prayer song, seeking God’s blessings for the nation, followed by a warm welcome to the distinguished guests. Students presented soul-stirring patriotic songs, celebrating the sacrifices of India’s brave heroes and igniting the spirit of nationalism in every listener.
In his address, Castelino proudly acknowledged India’s remarkable economic progress, noting that the nation now ranks 4th globally. Reflecting on the country’s journey since independence, he emphasized that freedom and unity have been the foundation of India’s growth over the past 79 years. Urging all to rise above caste and religion, he envisioned one united India where diversity is embraced as a strength.
Paying tribute to the sacrifices of the nation’s forefathers, he expressed gratitude for the blessings of education and literacy in the present era. He, however, cautioned against the threats of corruption and communalism, stressing that loyalty, integrity, and commitment are vital for the nation’s progress — values that should also extend to institutions like schools that mould young minds.
Highlighting the opportunities provided by the government for youth empowerment, Castelino declared education to be the most powerful weapon against corruption and division. He called upon students to uphold peace, harmony, and respect for all religions, cherishing the cultural diversity that makes India unique. In his stirring conclusion, he reminded all, “We are the proud Indians of our country India, and it is our duty to preserve its unity, dignity, and peace for generations to come.”
The celebration was further brightened by the kindergarten tiny tots, whose rhythmic dances and patriotic songs added innocence and charm to the day. An innovative presentation by the students on the significance of Independence Day creatively showcased the historical journey and importance of the occasion. This was followed by an adorable segment in which the nursery children confidently introduced the national symbols the National Flag, Emblem, Bird, Animal, and Flower. Their charming presentation drew smiles and applause from the audience.
Next, a powerful army dance was performed by the students, vividly portraying the courage, discipline, and sacrifice of India’s soldiers. The precise movements, striking military formations, and expressive gestures stirred deep emotions, filling the hall with pride and admiration. Rich in emotion and historical significance, the performance left the audience both inspired and reflective.
Marking the spirit of the occasion, the school had also organised a patriotic singing competition for students from KG to class 10. The winners were honoured during the programme, receiving their prizes amidst loud cheers and hearty encouragement from their peers.
The cultural programme was graced by Karen Dsouza as the chief guest. She warmly congratulated the prize winners and shared a short yet impactful story on patriotism. She posed thought-provoking questions to the gathering: Are we truly patriotic? Do we express love for our country only on Independence Day, or throughout the year? She emphasised that independence is not merely freedom from colonial rule, but also a call to personal responsibility, civic awareness, and adherence to the nation’s values. She reminded everyone that meaningful change takes time, yet each person can contribute through sincere and consistent efforts. She urged the audience to reflect deeply on every line of the National Pledge, treating it not as a formality, but as a solemn promise of loyalty and service to the country.
The kindergarten celebration was blessed with the presence of Sr Maria Sheetal, who encouraged the tiny tots to love their nation in small yet significant ways — by keeping their surroundings clean, green, and tidy.
The programme concluded with a heartfelt vote of thanks delivered by Thanish, expressing gratitude to all who contributed to making the celebration a grand success. The event was compared with confidence and warmth by Kangna and Risharya, who ensured smooth transitions and kept the audience engaged throughout.
The 79th Independence Day celebration at Carmel School, Kotekar, was not merely a commemoration of history, but a resounding call to live out the values of freedom, unity, and service every day.
