Lost passport overseas? UAE MOFA’s 30-minute ‘Return Document’ service brings citizens home swiftly

Abu Dhabi, Aug 14: UAE nationals stranded abroad due to lost, damaged, or expired passports can now breathe easy, thanks to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs’ (MOFA) rapid “Return Document” service. The initiative ensures citizens can return to the UAE within just 30 minutes of application approval — completely free of charge.

Applications can be submitted electronically via MOFA’s official website or mobile app, using UAE Pass for secure login and auto-filled personal details. Required documents include a copy of the affected passport, a police report in cases of loss, and a recent personal photo. Damaged passports require either the original or a written explanation, while newborn cases need attested birth certificates and parents’ passport copies.

Once processed, the Return Document — sent directly to the applicant’s email — serves as a temporary travel document valid solely for returning to the UAE.

MOFA has also issued essential safety guidelines for UAE travellers:

• Register with ‘Twajudi’ to receive prompt assistance during emergencies abroad.

• Keep copies of all travel documents, both physical and digital.

• Check security advisories before travelling and avoid high-risk areas.

• Ensure valid visas and insurance for medical and travel emergencies.

• Stay alert to avoid scams or theft.

• Save embassy and MOFA emergency contacts, including hotline 0097180024.

The ministry emphasises that combining the new Return Document service with proactive travel safety measures can greatly reduce disruptions. Citizens are urged to stay prepared, remain vigilant, and ensure smooth, secure journeys — with the reassurance that help is just minutes away if trouble strikes abroad.
