Diabetics can relish mangoes with right portion, says expert

Mangaluru, Aug 12: Many diabetics tend to avoid their favourite fruits, especially mangoes, fearing a spike in blood sugar levels. However, integrative lifestyle expert Luke Coutinho says that enjoying the king of fruits in moderation is possible, even for those with Type I or Type II diabetes.

In a video shared on Instagram, Luke explained that mangoes, despite their natural sugar content, also contain mangiferin, which has anti-diabetic properties if consumed the right way. “If you have poor control, overeat mangoes, or consume them late at night, it’s not good for you. But if you pair mango with nuts, seeds, or yogurt, you can prevent a sugar spike,” he said.

He stressed that portion size, quantity, and timing play a key role. “If it suits you, have one mango. If that spikes your sugar, go for half. Something is better than nothing. Be educated, not influenced,” he added.

Luke further advised that those with diabetes or fatty liver should skip mangoes if they don’t suit their condition, but focus on improving their overall lifestyle.
