Mysuru, Aug 10: A wave of sorrow swept through the Sri Chamarajendra Zoological Gardens, popularly known as Mysuru Zoo, as its beloved lioness Rakshitha, aged 21 years and four months, passed away on Saturday at around 7 am.

Zoo executive director D Rangaswamy said the lioness succumbed to age-related illness after being under treatment for a week. “Rakshitha’s passing is a profound loss to Mysuru Zoo. The zoo administration, veterinary team, and animal caretakers deeply mourn her loss.

We are grateful for the support from the global veterinary community and wildlife conservationists during her treatment,” he said.

Rakshitha, one of the zoo’s star attractions, was born to Narasimha and Manini on April 1, 2004.
