New Delhi, Aug 8: As cough and cold cases rise during the monsoon, nutritionist Nmami Agarwal has advised the public to avoid consuming food and beverages that are either too hot or too cold, stating that extremes in temperature can worsen chronic cough, especially in individuals with asthma or Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD).
Sharing tips through her recent Instagram video, Nmami emphasized that respiratory health is closely linked to our dietary habits. "Extreme temperatures hurt our immunity and worsen coughs," she said, cautioning against consuming refrigerator-cold items like chilled yoghurt or ice cream, as well as piping hot soups or beverages.
"Eat foods at room temperature," she advised. "If you want to consume something from the fridge, let it come to room temperature first. And avoid scalding hot drinks like tea or coffee, no matter how comforting they seem."
The nutritionist also recommended focusing on anti-inflammatory foods, particularly those rich in omega-3 fatty acids, to support lung function and reduce inflammation. “Add omega-3s to your diet—flax seeds, walnuts, fish oil, and salmon. These good fats are important for better respiratory health,” she said.
In a slight correction to her video caption, she clarified that such omega-3 rich foods should be included, not avoided, as they help combat free radicals and aid in managing symptoms of asthma, COPD, and recurrent cough.
Concluding her advice, Nmami stressed the importance of balanced nutrition and moderation in food temperature, adding that these simple dietary changes, when combined with medical guidance, can go a long way in improving respiratory well-being during the damp monsoon months.
