Silchar, Aug 5: In a shocking incident that echoes a reel-life plot, a man posing as a gynaecologist has been arrested in Silchar, Assam, for allegedly conducting over 50 caesarean and gynaecological surgeries without a valid medical degree.
The accused, Pulok Malakar, had been masquerading as a qualified doctor for more than a decade and was employed at two private hospitals in Silchar. His long-standing deception came to light when police, acting on a tip-off, raided the hospital while he was inside the operation theatre performing a C-section.

“We verified his credentials and discovered all documents were forged. He is not a qualified medical practitioner,” confirmed Cachar SP Numal Mahatta.
Malakar, a resident of Sribhumi in Assam, was produced before a local court on Monday and remanded to five days in police custody.
The arrest comes amid a state-wide crackdown on quackery. The Himanta Biswa Sarma-led government had earlier formed an Anti-Quackery and Vigilance Cell to identify and act against fake doctors, especially those targeting economically vulnerable communities.
So far, the unit has registered more than 10 cases, highlighting the growing concern over unqualified individuals exploiting the healthcare needs of low- and middle-income groups across both rural and urban Assam.
