New Delhi, Aug 4: A brazen chain-snatching incident involving Congress MP R. Sudha Ramakrishnan in the high-security Chanakyapuri area of the national capital has ignited a political storm, with Congress leaders slamming the Union Home Ministry and the Delhi government for what they allege is a complete collapse of law and order.
The incident occurred early Monday morning while the Mayiladuthurai MP was on a morning walk near Gates 3 and 4 of the Polish Embassy, accompanied by fellow Rajya Sabha MP Rajathi. According to the complaint, an unidentified man wearing a full-face helmet approached on a Scooty and snatched Sudha’s gold chain before speeding off. The area is considered one of the most secure in the city, housing numerous foreign embassies and VIP residences.

Congress Rajya Sabha MP Jebi Mather expressed shock and frustration over the incident. “In the heart of the capital, a woman MP from Tamil Nadu is attacked, her chain is snatched, her clothes torn. If this can happen under the nose of the Union Home Ministry, what does it say about women’s safety in India?” she questioned.
Echoing similar sentiments, Congress MP Pramod Tiwari accused the BJP-led central government of gross negligence. “Shootings, murders, and now chain snatching in the most secure parts of Delhi — this is a damning indictment of the law and order situation under PM Modi’s rule. It’s clear the system is failing.”
Congress MP Hibi Eden also criticized the response by law enforcement. “Sudha reported the incident immediately, but there was no timely response from the police. If a sitting woman MP isn’t safe, what can a common citizen expect? We tried to raise the issue in Parliament, but the Speaker denied permission. We will not let this be brushed aside.”
The Delhi Police have launched an investigation and are currently reviewing CCTV footage from the area. Meanwhile, the Congress party is preparing to raise the matter forcefully in Parliament, demanding accountability and improved security for all citizens — not just public figures.
The incident has once again brought the spotlight on public safety in Delhi, particularly in areas meant to be under tight surveillance and protection.
