Burhanpur, Aug 4: A brutal murder in Navara village under Nepanagar police station limits has sparked outrage across Madhya Pradesh after a 35-year-old woman was killed for allegedly refusing to convert to Islam and marry her harasser.

The victim, Bhagyashree Namdev Dhanuk, was attacked late at night in her home by Sheikh Raees (42), who reportedly slit her throat and stabbed her multiple times. Police arrested the accused within hours of the crime.

Bhagyashree’s sister, Subhadra Bai, alleged that the victim had been facing constant harassment from Raees. “He used to beat her, pull her hair, and pressurize her to convert and marry him. When she refused, he barged into the house and killed her,” she said, speaking through tears.

Confirming the arrest, Additional SP Burhanpur Antar Singh Kanesh said the accused has been booked under charges of murder and atrocities.

The incident triggered strong protests from the Hindu community, with locals calling it a case of “love jihad.” Protestor Amit Varude accused police of negligence: “She had filed a complaint just days ago, but no action was taken. The accused must be given the harshest punishment.”

Former cabinet minister Archana Chitnis met the bereaved family and demanded that negligent officers be held accountable.

Meanwhile, in a swift move, local administration initiated action against illegal properties of the accused. SDM Bhagirath Vakhala said Raees had encroached on public land and other irregularities have been noted for action.
