New Delhi, Jul 23: A political storm has erupted in the national capital as torrential rains on Tuesday morning led to severe waterlogging across several parts of Delhi, drawing sharp criticism from the opposition Aam Aadmi Party (AAP).
Top AAP leaders, including former ministers Manish Sisodia, Atishi, and Saurabh Bhardwaj, lashed out at the ruling BJP government, accusing it of failure to deliver on its promises of tackling monsoon-related issues. The party shared multiple visuals on social media—some showing citizens swimming and boating through flooded streets.
In a now-viral video, a man from West Vinod Nagar is seen backstroking on a submerged road while sarcastically remarking, “Our MLA says there is no waterlogging. Let me show you by swimming here.” Another clip featured a man floating in an inflatable bathtub, mocking the administration’s inaction.
AAP took a direct swipe at Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta, asking, “Where is your proper planning? You claimed Delhi wouldn’t flood, yet people are swimming on roads. Why not join them?”
Former minister Atishi congratulated the CM with biting sarcasm, saying, “Many congratulations to CM Rekha Gupta for starting so many swimming pools in Delhi.”
Meanwhile, former AAP corporator Geeta Rawat revisited a flooded NH-24 in Patparganj, sarcastically questioning local MLA Ravinder Singh Negi’s performance with a video captioned, “The boat is still rowing today. This means you have failed.” The video was reposted by Manish Sisodia.
MLA Negi defended the situation, stating, “It has rained heavily. Waterlogging is inevitable. Four pumps are working. We are only four months into governance and working continuously.” He also blamed previous governments for neglecting the issue for over a decade.
Heavy rain was reported in parts of Noida and Ghaziabad as well. Roads under the Mahamaya flyover and near Ambedkar Park were inundated, causing massive traffic jams. Delhi airport issued advisories for air passengers amid disruptions.
The India Meteorological Department had earlier issued an orange alert for the region, forecasting moderate rainfall and thunderstorms.
