Mumbai, Jul 22: In a spine-chilling crime reminiscent of the Bollywood thriller Drishyam, police in Mumbai have uncovered the decomposed body of a 40-year-old man buried beneath freshly laid tiles inside his own house in Nalasopara. The victim, Vijay Chavan -a home renovation contractor- had been missing for over two weeks. Now, the investigation reveals a horrifying tale of betrayal, greed, and premeditated murder.
According to police sources, Vijay was allegedly killed by his wife, Chaman, with the help of her lover Monu- a local youth and their neighbour. Shocking details have emerged indicating that Chaman had planned the murder well in advance. Nearly 12 days before the murder, she had a pit-measuring about 3.5 feet deep and 6 feet long-dug inside the house, which was later covered with newly laid tiles.

The gruesome truth came to light after Vijay’s brothers, who had grown suspicious due to his sudden disappearance, visited his residence. Chaman allegedly gave evasive answers, claiming Vijay had gone to work in Borivali, Kandivali, or Malad. However, on July 19, she was seen on CCTV leaving the house with her 7-year-old son after purchasing samosas from a local vendor-and never returned.
When the family broke open the house on Monday, they noticed oddly placed floor tiles that appeared recently fixed. Upon informing the police, a search was conducted, which led to the discovery of a black plastic bag buried below the floor-containing Vijay’s decomposed body.
Police suspect a financial motive behind the murder. Vijay had recently received Rs 6 lakh from an insurance policy and was planning to buy a new house. He had already transferred the title of their existing home to Chaman’s name. Investigators say she used Vijay’s mobile to generate OTPs and withdrew money from his bank accounts, although the total amount siphoned off remains unclear.
Further probing revealed that Chaman had been in a relationship with Monu, a neighbour. Sources claimed Monu’s mother had once caught him talking to Chaman and even seized his phone, but the relationship allegedly continued in secret.
A murder case has been registered against Chaman and Monu, both of whom are currently absconding along with the minor child. Police teams have launched a manhunt to trace the duo as the investigation intensifies.
The brutal crime has left the Nalasopara community shaken, with many struggling to believe how a seemingly normal household concealed such a macabre secret beneath its very floor.
