New Delhi, Jul 18: In a shocking case of betrayal and theft, gold jewellery worth over Rs 13 lac was allegedly stolen by a man who spiked his friend’s food while staying together at a hotel in Delhi’s Paharganj area, police said on Thursday.

The victim, Pardeep Kumar, a resident of Amritsar, had lodged a complaint against his friend Prabh Singh, who is also from Amritsar. According to Kumar, the two were staying together in a hotel in central Delhi when the incident took place on July 8.

As per the FIR, Singh allegedly mixed drugs in Kumar’s food during the night and decamped with gold ornaments weighing around 1,340 grams. The stolen jewellery, valued at more than Rs 13 lac, was reportedly kept in the room by Kumar.

Acting on the complaint, Delhi Police registered a case under Section 123 (causing hurt by means of poison to commit offence) and Section 305(a) (theft in a dwelling house or place of stay) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).

The Paharganj police have initiated an investigation and are scanning CCTV footage from the hotel and surrounding premises. Hotel staff are also being questioned to trace Singh's movements and aid in the recovery of the stolen valuables.

Authorities have assured that efforts are on to nab the accused, who is currently absconding.
