Colva, Jul 9: Serious safety concerns have emerged at Colva beach as motorists and citizens voice alarm over a sinking stretch of road leading to the iconic tourist spot, along with unattended, corroded lamp poles that collapsed during recent strong winds.
Locals warn that if urgent repairs are not undertaken, the deteriorating road condition could result in a tragic accident. A barricade placed by traffic police now stands in the middle of the road, narrowing the already busy route and causing congestion. “Colva attracts tourists from across the country, and yet authorities seem content with just placing a barricade. This is not a solution,” said a concerned motorist.
Meanwhile, at the beach square, rusted ornamental lamp posts that came crashing down have still not been cleared. Citizens say this neglect from the authorities – including the Tourism Department and Goa Tourism Development Corporation – is unbecoming of a beach that holds the official "iconic" tag.
“Despite Colva’s reputation, the damaged lamp poles continue to lie abandoned. It’s a safety hazard and gives a poor image to visitors,” said Arun Kalekar, a resident of Colva. He also demanded the immediate removal of other unstable poles in the area to avoid further danger.
Locals now hope that authorities act swiftly before the situation worsens and causes irreparable damage to life or Colva’s reputation.
