Gorakhpur/Bareilly, Jun 30: President Droupadi Murmu on Monday called on India’s new generation of doctors and veterinary professionals to commit themselves to serving the most underserved sections of society and to bring compassion and innovation to their professions.
While presiding over the first convocation of AIIMS-Gorakhpur, the President highlighted the essential role doctors play in nation-building. “Doctors don’t just cure diseases — they form the foundation of a healthy, progressive society,” she said, urging graduates to make empathy, trust, and honesty cornerstones of their practice.
She emphasized the need for improved healthcare access in rural and tribal areas, saying many parts of India still lack high-quality medical services. “I hope you will step forward to serve those who need it most,” she said, encouraging the young doctors to view medicine as a service to humanity, not merely a profession.

She also stressed the importance of reforming medical education to include training in doctor-patient communication and empathy, and called for creating an ecosystem where such values are integrated into a doctor’s formative years.
Later in the day, at the convocation of the Indian Veterinary Research Institute (IVRI) in Bareilly, President Murmu championed the global concept of ‘One Health’, which recognizes the interconnectedness of humans, animals, plants, and the environment.
“As a premier veterinary institute, IVRI has an important responsibility, especially in tackling zoonotic diseases,” she noted, encouraging veterinarians to harness cutting-edge tools like genome editing, artificial intelligence, embryo transfer, and big data analytics.
She appealed to institutes like IVRI to focus on developing indigenous, low-cost animal treatments and nutritional solutions to support farmers and rural communities.
Commending the students for choosing to care for “innocent and voiceless” animals, she urged them to consider entrepreneurship and start-ups in animal sciences, which could generate employment and contribute to India’s growing economy.
President Murmu concluded her address by encouraging graduates from both institutions to become champions of inclusive, compassionate, and technology-driven service to society.
