Iraqi PM orders vigilant monitoring of radiation amid rising Israel-Iran tensions

Baghdad, Jun 20: In light of growing regional tensions stemming from the escalating Israel-Iran conflict, Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia' al-Sudani has ordered authorities to intensify surveillance for potential radiation threats across the country.

The directive was issued on Thursday during a crucial meeting with the Central Emergency Operations Room for Radiological and Nuclear Incidents, where national preparedness for radiological emergencies was thoroughly reviewed.

According to a statement released by the Prime Minister’s media office, radiation specialists reassured the Prime Minister that current monitoring shows no spike in background radiation levels anywhere in Iraq.

The emergency team further informed al-Sudani of their full operational readiness to respond effectively to any nuclear or radiological incidents, should they arise.

This move comes amid rising anxiety in the region, fueled by unconfirmed reports of Israeli airstrikes targeting Iranian nuclear sites — actions that have sparked fears of potential radiation leaks and wider fallout.

With regional instability mounting, Iraq appears to be proactively strengthening its disaster response framework to safeguard its citizens from any indirect consequences of the Israel-Iran standoff.
