Mumbai, Jun 12: Chandan K. Anand, who’s currently drawing acclaim for his role as Roshan Mathew in the show Kankhajura, has opened up about the deeply immersive process he follows to portray emotionally layered characters.
Known for his nuanced performances, including his role in the Netflix series Class, Anand revealed that stepping into such roles goes far beyond technical skill. “It’s never easy to portray complex characters,” he said. “You spend years honing your craft, but when it comes to embodying a truly layered personality, technique alone won’t get you there. You have to disappear into the soul of the character so completely that any sense of ‘acting’ vanishes.”
He likens his script to a “sacred text,” claiming he reads it nearly a hundred times before shooting begins. “I keep visualizing, digging into subtext, building personal backstories. Eventually, something shifts — the breath changes, the eyes change, and you stop performing. That’s when the magic starts.”
Chandan also recently worked alongside Janhvi Kapoor, Ishaan Khatter, and Vishal in Karan Johar’s Homebound, directed by acclaimed filmmaker Neeraj Ghaywan. While details about his role remain under wraps, Anand described the experience as a major milestone.
“To collaborate with Neeraj sir, whose work I’ve admired for years, under the Dharma Productions banner — that’s a dream come true,” he said.
Praising his co-actors, Chandan added, “Janhvi, Ishaan, Vishal — they each bring such different energies to set. It elevates your own work.
I’m not chasing stardom; I’m chasing truth in performance. And when someone like Neeraj sir trusts your ability, it feels like you’re not just playing a role — you’re arriving.”
Though he couldn’t attend Homebound’s recent Cannes premiere in person, the actor was humbled by the global response. “It’s surreal. Just knowing that a film you were part of moved an international audience — that’s the kind of validation artists live for.”
