Bengaluru, June 4: Chief minister Siddaramaiah has confirmed that 11 fans lost their lives and 47 others were injured in a stampede that occurred near Chinnaswamy Stadium during a celebration event for Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB), following the team’s maiden IPL title win in 18 years.

The deceased include Divyanshika (14), a 9th student of of Poornaprajna School in Bengaluru, Sahana (24), a techie in Bosch and a native of Kolar and Poornachandra (34), a civil engineer from Mandya.

Compensation announced; probe ordered

Addressing an emergency press conference on Wednesday evening, chief minister Siddaramaiah announced a compensation of Rs 10 lakh each to the families of the deceased. The state government will also bear the medical expenses of the injured. He further announced that a magisterial inquiry, led by the deputy commissioner, has been ordered into the incident. Those injured have been admitted to Vaidehi Super Speciality Hospital, Bowring Hospital, and Lady Curzon Hospital in Bengaluru.

Crowd turnout exceeds expectations

Siddaramaiah clarified that no untoward incidents took place during the official programme held on the steps of Vidhana Soudha. However, the stampede occurred near Chinnaswamy Stadium due to an unexpectedly large crowd. While the stadium has a seating capacity of 35,000, more than two lakh people had gathered around the venue, leading to the unfortunate incident, the chief minister explained.

Tragedy mars RCB victory celebrations in Bengaluru: 8 killed in stampede, over 15 hospitalised

Daijiworld Media Network – Bengaluru

Bengaluru, June 4: Celebrations over Royal Challengers Bengaluru's historic maiden IPL title turned tragic in the city on Tuesday as at least eight fans died and scores of people were hospitalised following a stampede outside the M Chinnaswamy Stadium.

The stampede occurred when massive crowds gathered near the stadium to catch a glimpse of the RCB players during a victory procession. Chaos erupted after gates 18, 19, and 20 were suddenly opened, causing fans to surge forward. In the ensuing crush, many fell and were trampled, leading to severe injuries.

According to police, four fans—two each admitted at Bowring Hospital and Vaidehi Super Speciality Hospital—succumbed to their injuries. Over 15 others were treated for exhaustion and minor injuries. One woman fan who collapsed near Gate No. 12 was quickly transported to hospital by car. At Gate No. 6, a youth attempting to climb the entrance gate reportedly fractured his leg.

The situation spiraled out of control despite heavy police presence, prompting law enforcement to resort to a mild lathi-charge to disperse the crowd and prevent further casualties. Massive traffic snarls were reported around the stadium due to both foot and vehicular congestion.

The tragedy unfolded just hours before a grand RCB felicitation event was scheduled at the Chinnaswamy Stadium, organised by the Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA). Police later clarified that only fans with valid tickets or official passes would be allowed inside the stadium. Citizens were urged to use public transport and metro services due to limited parking availability in the vicinity.

Earlier in the day, Deputy Chief Minister D K Shivakumar welcomed the victorious RCB team at HAL Airport. In a heartwarming gesture, he handed over a Kannada flag to team icon Virat Kohli, who proudly waved it before cheering fans.

Thousands of supporters lined the streets, shouting slogans like “RCB… Kohli!” and “Ee Sala Cup Namdu” as the team made its way to the stadium. The city had turned into a sea of red as Rajat Patidar’s team returned with the IPL 2025 trophy after defeating Punjab by 6 runs in the final held in Ahmedabad.

Over Rs 150 crore worth alcohol sold amid fan frenzy

Meanwhile, the state recorded an all-time high liquor sale of nearly Rs 158 crore as fans rejoiced the team’s win with abandon. The RCB victory sparked a massive spike in liquor sales across Karnataka.

On June 3 alone, a record-breaking 1.48 lac beer boxes were sold, generating Rs 30.66 crore in revenue—almost five times higher than the Rs 6.29 crore generated on the same day last year. Additionally, other liquor sales crossed Rs 127.88 crore, bringing the total single-day liquor sales to Rs 157.94 crore—up by over Rs 132 crore from the previous year.

While RCB’s maiden IPL victory after 18 seasons brought jubilation to fans and the city alike, the unfortunate stampede cast a grim shadow over the celebrations. Authorities have called for better crowd management and stronger security measures for large public events moving forward.

I won't blame the public.. it obviously the one who organized this event has to be held responsible.. when u have no knowledge on crowd management then don't arrange such event simple.. kaas daaye karmoga? This preposterous!!!! People were in high emotion.. were they could not contain their excitement therefore government should have arrangement this event after 3 or 4days when people came back to their sense and also with proper arrangements.. what was the urgency ? Time and time again it proves we do not have good governance

The government program was at the steps of vidhana soudha and there was no stampede. The stampede was at chinnaswamy stadium, not at vidhan soudha. People should use prudence. Safety first, not the fans, I blame the public for their utter negligence.

The Government did not invite public people to attend in large crowds. People must be aware of their own limits and safety, instead here people have become mad and there might have some miscreants involved for blame game. The BCCI have not taken care of the crowd management. Government has only given permission and here there was no VIP entrance like Kumbh Mela. RIP to the deceased.

No one would expect such a huge crowd. It was like a festival for Kannadigas. Police cannot do anything when there is sudden influx of people.

May the 11 departed souls rest in eternal peace! It's sad to hear of our foolish citizens, in the year 1880 a well-known writer and critic late Bernard shaw said, 11 players are playing and 11millon fools are watching.......this is the same situation still in India instead of 11million now it's 111 million and these people are good for nothing.... No humanity....We should ban cricket in India....total corruption everywhere...

Seeing the sea of people who were walking towards Vidhana Soudha through KR Circle, such situation was really an unfortunate event, as there was no time for preparedness and most importantly even it was not expected that so many people would be gathering at the venue.
