Contractor booked after scooterist dies in unbarricaded pit in Dabolim

Vasco, Jun 1: Vasco police have registered a case against a flyover construction company and its site officials following the death of a 46-year-old scooter rider who fell into an unbarricaded pit at a flyover construction site near Dabolim.

The victim, Maruti Jadhav, a resident of Dabolim, was riding his scooter near the “Material Organisation Depot Gate” along the under-construction four-lane flyover on May 28 when he plunged into the pit, sustaining fatal head injuries. He was declared brought dead at the Sub-District Hospital in Chicalim.

Police said the contractor, M/s M Venkata Rao Infra Projects Pvt Ltd, along with Project Manager Mihir Kumar and Site Supervisor Sanjay Kumar Gunjan, failed to adequately barricade the area or provide proper safety warnings to road users.

An offence has been registered under Section 106(1) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023 (causing death by negligence).

The case was registered based on a complaint by PSI Mayur Sawant from Vasco Police Station. Further investigation is underway under the supervision of PI Vaibhav Naik and Mormugao DySP Gurudas Kadam.

Police have emphasized that construction sites must implement proper safety measures to prevent such tragedies.
