Mangaluru, May 31: Dakshina Kannada district in-charge Dinesh Gundu Rao on Saturday addressed a press conference at the Mangaluru police commissioner’s office, emphasizing the need for strict law enforcement and lasting peace in the region, which has witnessed recent communal disturbances.
He said he had held discussions with the newly appointed Mangaluru police commissioner and the new SP. “Both officers have a good reputation within the department. They now carry increased responsibility. I am confident they will take firm decisions on public safety and security,” he stated.

“There is a positive perception in the district. People have confidence in the system, and the government is backing these officers fully,” he added.
Highlighting a recurring issue, the minister noted, “Many times, politicians interfere in such matters. Politics should not be allowed to mix with law and order. Everything must happen according to the law. I have instructed the officers to work fearlessly.”
He revealed that a special task force has already been formed, which will benefit three districts. “Maintaining peace and harmony is essential. Communal clashes must be stopped, and permanent peace must be established,” he urged.
“As much as 98% of the people want peace. Only 2% want conflict for publicity. They talk as if they are fighting a war in Pakistan,” Rao remarked, criticizing those who incite tensions through provocative statements.
He stressed the importance of maintaining law and order and promoting harmony. “We must win over hearts. A peace meeting will be organised in the coming days,” he said.
Referring to the issue of hate speech, Rao noted that those making such statements often get bail easily and face no strict punishment. “This emboldens them to keep making provocative statements. Even political leaders and MLAs are making such comments, as are members of some organisations,” he said.
