Chandigarh, May 25: Controversy erupted on Saturday after BJP Rajya Sabha MP from Haryana, Ram Chander Jangra, made an insensitive remark in connection with the recent terrorist attack on tourists in Jammu and Kashmir’s Pahalgam. The parliamentarian suggested that the women, whose husbands were gunned down by terrorists, "lacked the spirit of warriors" and should have fought back.

Speaking to media persons, Jangra reportedly said that the women victims "pleaded with folded hands" instead of resisting the attackers, implying that a stronger response could have altered the outcome. "They lacked warrior spirit," he remarked, triggering instant backlash from various political leaders, social activists and netizens.

The comment sparked a massive political row, with opposition parties condemning it as "highly insensitive" and "disrespectful to victims of terror." Many questioned the MP’s understanding of the trauma faced by innocent civilians in a brutal terror ambush.

Facing mounting criticism, the BJP MP later issued a statement of apology. He claimed that his remarks were "distorted" and taken out of context. “I deeply regret the hurt caused. My intention was never to insult the victims. My words were misinterpreted. I have full sympathy for the families who suffered in the attack,” he said.

Earlier this week, a group of tourists was targeted by terrorists in the Pahalgam region, leading to tragic loss of lives and widespread condemnation. The incident has raised renewed concerns over security arrangements in the valley, particularly in areas frequented by tourists.

Even as investigations continue into the attack, Jangra’s remarks have further fuelled public sentiment, with many urging elected representatives to show sensitivity and solidarity during such distressing times.
