Siliguri, May 24: In a heart-wrenching act of courage and sacrifice, 23-year-old Lieutenant Shashank Tiwari of the Indian Army laid down his life while rescuing a fellow soldier during an operational patrol in North Sikkim.

Commissioned into the Sikkim Scouts in December 2024, Lt Tiwari was leading a route opening patrol towards a tactical base when the tragic incident occurred. Around 11 am, Agniveer Stephen Subba lost his balance while crossing a log bridge and fell into a fast-moving mountain stream.

Without hesitation, Lt Tiwari jumped into the freezing waters to save his drowning comrade. Another soldier, Naik Pukar Katel, followed to assist. Together, they successfully rescued Agniveer Subba. However, in the process, Lt Tiwari was swept away by the powerful current.

His body was recovered approximately 800 metres downstream, half an hour later.

The brave officer is survived by his parents and sister. The Indian Army, saluting his ultimate sacrifice, said: “Despite his tender age and brief service, Lieutenant Tiwari leaves behind a legacy of courage and camaraderie that will inspire generations of soldiers to come.”

A solemn wreath-laying ceremony was held at the Bengdubi Military Station, with full military honours, led by Lt Gen Zubin A Minwalla, GOC of Trishakti Corps. “His bravery and devotion to duty will continue to inspire generations. The Indian Army stands shoulder to shoulder with the family in this hour of grief,” Trishakti Corps posted on X.

Lt Tiwari’s mortal remains have been sent to his hometown for the final rites.
