Israel urges mass evacuation in Northern Gaza ahead of escalated offensive

Jerusalem, May 23: In a sharp escalation of hostilities, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) on Thursday issued urgent evacuation orders to thousands of residents across the northern Gaza Strip, warning of intensified military action in the coming days. The directive marks a grim turning point in the ongoing conflict, which has now extended into its 19th month.

The IDF has instructed civilians in Beit Lahia, Jabalia, the Jabalia refugee camp, and several northern neighbourhoods of Gaza City to evacuate immediately to southern regions, citing imminent military operations in these zones. “The IDF will significantly expand its military operations in your areas,” said Avichay Adraee, IDF spokesperson, in a statement posted on social platform X. “The areas you are in are considered dangerous combat zones… For your safety, evacuate immediately to the south.”

These areas, already pounded by airstrikes in recent days, have seen repeated displacements, with many families fleeing for the third or fourth time since the conflict began.

The evacuation order comes amid Israel’s newly launched offensive, codenamed Operation Gideon’s Chariots, which aims to decisively dismantle Hamas infrastructure and secure the release of 58 hostages reportedly still held within Gaza. According to Israeli sources, the operation seeks complete control over Gaza, with continued military presence and strategic displacement of civilians to the south.

Despite mounting global appeals for a ceasefire and a negotiated hostage release, Israeli leadership remains steadfast in pursuing military objectives.

Meanwhile, the humanitarian crisis continues to deepen. The Palestinian health ministry in Gaza has reported a staggering death toll of 53,655 since the outbreak of hostilities in October 2023. In just the past 24 hours, over 100 lives have been lost, as hospitals struggle to cope with the surge in casualties.

On May 19, the IDF also ordered civilians in Khan Younis, a key city in southern Gaza, to evacuate immediately. Residents from nearby areas including Bani Suhaila and Abasan were also instructed to flee to the coastal zone of al-Mawasi. “Terrorist organisations have brought you disaster. For your safety, evacuate immediately,” reiterated IDF spokesperson Adraee.

With no signs of de-escalation and the civilian toll continuing to rise, the latest developments have intensified fears of a prolonged humanitarian catastrophe in the densely populated enclave.
