Kasargod, May 20: Heavy rain accompanied by gusty winds since Monday evening has disrupted normal life and traffic across the district. Roads have been washed away in several places, and fallen trees have blocked vehicle movement.

In Karandakkad and Cherkala, trees fell on service roads, causing long hours of traffic disruption. In Karandakkad, a tree fell on power lines, resulting in a power outage in the area. Fire and rescue personnel rushed to the spots, cleared the trees, and restored smooth traffic flow.

Waterlogging on service roads of the national highway and road cave-ins at multiple spots have further obstructed vehicular movement. In many areas, traffic has come to a standstill, with only light vehicles being allowed to pass.

Due to the collapse of roads, heavy vehicles are unable to use the service roads. Near Periya, a private bus travelling from Kannur to Mangaluru veered off and got stuck in roadside mud early Tuesday morning.

At Kalikadavu, waterlogging on service roads has brought traffic to a halt. Damage to crops has also been reported from various parts of the district. An orange alert has been declared in the district until Wednesday.
