New Delhi, May 16: Leila Kabir, noted social worker and wife of late socialist leader George Fernandes, passed away Thursday evening at her Delhi residence after a prolonged battle with cancer. She was 88. Her cremation took place on Friday at Green Park.

Daughter of former Union minister Humayun Kabir, Leila was diagnosed with intestinal cancer nearly two years ago and had initially recovered but recently saw a decline in her health. She chose to spend her final days at home, declining hospital care. Her son Sean arrived from the US on Thursday.

Leila married George Fernandes in 1971 while working as an assistant director with the Indian Red Cross. Fernandes, a prominent opposition leader, died in January 2019.

Attending the funeral, Janata Dal (United) leader Aneel Prasad Hegde recalled their courageous role during the 1975 Emergency. While George went underground, Leila campaigned internationally against the authoritarian regime, returning to India only after its lift.

Dr Sunilam of Kisan Sangharsh Samiti paid tribute, recalling her dedication to social causes until the end and her unwavering support to George during his illness.

Leila Kabir is remembered as a committed social worker who stood alongside her husband through India’s turbulent political history.
