Washington, May 15: US President Donald Trump has claimed he asked Apple CEO Tim Cook to halt iPhone manufacturing in India unless the production is meant exclusively for the Indian market. Speaking during a visit to Qatar, Trump said, “I had a little problem with Tim Cook yesterday. He is building all over India. I don’t want you building in India.”
Trump asserted that following their discussion, Apple would increase its production within the United States.
This statement comes shortly after Tim Cook had announced that India would play a key role in supplying iPhones to the US, stating that a majority of iPhones sold in America would soon be made in India.

The shift is part of Apple’s ongoing strategy to diversify its supply chain away from China due to the impact of trade tensions and the COVID-19 pandemic.
Currently, most iPhones made in India are assembled at Foxconn’s plant in southern India, while Tata Group, which took over Wistron’s local operations, also oversees Pegatron’s facilities. Both companies are expanding rapidly, building new factories and increasing production capacity.
Apple reportedly assembled $22 billion worth of iPhones in India in the year ending March 2025 — a 60% increase from the previous year.
