Bengaluru, May 11: As part of the 'Shakti scheme', one of the five guarantees promised by the Congress government, women across Karnataka are entitled to free travel on government buses. Since the scheme’s implementation, state-run buses are witnessing heavy occupancy, especially by women. Many board buses in groups, holding Aadhaar cards, availing the free ride. However, those who skip collecting the free ticket are now being penalised heavily by KSRTC.

Women passengers are not exempt from taking tickets despite the free travel. They must show their Aadhaar card and collect a valid ticket. They must also alight at the stop mentioned on the ticket.

Any violation of the rules results in a fixed fine. Male passengers too must purchase tickets; failure to do so will invite steep penalties.

Rs 7.32 lac collected as fines

KSRTC (Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation) has collected a hefty Rs 7.32 lac in fines in April alone from 3,780 ticketless passengers. Additionally, disciplinary action has been initiated against the violators.
