Punjab on high alert amid surge in drone threats from across the border

Chandigarh, May 11: In a serious escalation of cross-border tensions, Punjab Governor and UT Administrator Gulab Chand Kataria revealed on Saturday that the state has faced the highest number of drone intrusions from Pakistan over the past three days. Notably, Chandigarh was among the intended targets, prompting heightened security measures across the region.

“Chandigarh was targeted—drones were launched in its direction,” Kataria stated, highlighting similar drone activity near sensitive defence zones in Pathankot, Amritsar, and Gurdaspur.

Despite the ongoing ceasefire between India and Pakistan, Governor Kataria emphasized that Punjab remains in a state of heightened alert. “Our forces successfully neutralized these threats. However, given the unpredictable nature of the adversary, Punjab will stay fully prepared for any eventuality,” he said.

These remarks came following a multi-party meeting convened by Kataria and Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann, bringing together representatives from across the political spectrum to address the security situation.

Kataria lauded the swift and effective response of the armed forces and the unyielding support of local residents. “This battle was not only fought by our troops but also by the people of Punjab, especially villagers who boosted morale by providing meals and assistance to the forces,” he said.

Chief Minister Mann reiterated the state’s commitment to staying vigilant. “We’ve received clearance from the Centre to deploy anti-drone systems along the border. Our readiness will persist until advised otherwise by security agencies,” he confirmed.

He further noted the importance of unity and peace, citing a Sarv Dharam (interfaith) meeting where religious leaders pledged to uphold national interest and promote communal harmony.

During the all-party discussion, which included leaders from BJP, Congress, SAD, BSP, and others, there was unanimous agreement on collectively appealing to the Prime Minister for an economic support package for Punjab. Mann supported the initiative, stressing that Punjab’s strategic role in national defense warrants special economic attention. “A dedicated package will reinforce confidence among investors and industry players looking to engage with the state,” he said.
