Udupi: Municipal council imposes Rs 5,000 fine for roadside garbage dumping

Udupi, May 17: Despite ongoing cleanliness drives aimed at keeping Udupi city free from trash, some residents continue to dispose of garbage on roadsides. In response, the municipal council has intensified efforts to confront and penalize those responsible for littering.

On May 15, the council apprehended a vehicle driver who was caught dumping glass debris in front of the wastewater purification unit on NH66 in Nittur. The driver was fined Rs 5,000, according to a press release from the office of the municipal council commissioner.

    This is a wonderful decision from Udupi administration. 5000 fine at least will some kind of restraint will be there. Mangalore administration totally dead it seems. Hope they will wake up and do similar or more severe punishment for garbage dumping.

    There is mismanagement in Garbage collection. Many items are refused like tender coconut shells, thermocol etc. Let municipality tell the residents how to dispose off them. Otherwise residents will throw them on road side. Disposing construction waste is also a hassle. No guidance. Municipality should come with clear guidelines on the waste disposal system.

    I think most of the staff are educated and literate. Our MCC is fit to vacate footpath venders at market road and near SBI.

    Cleanliness drive?? Garbage collectors come home once a week. There is absolute mismanagement in terms of garbage collection. There are also a lot of places where people just throw garbage on the roadside. I think there is only two solution for this menace. Heavy fine and ensure garbage is picked up everyday. There are some people who do not want to pay 50 rupees a month for garbage collection and they throw it on the road side.
