Mangaluru, Jun 10: The Kannur-BC road highway, NH 48 stretch has become a garbage dumping ground. Waste is piled up on the service road at Brahmarakotlu, highway at Kannur and Netravati bridge BC road. Heaps of garbage, mainly plastic waste, are all thrown around and have not been removed for a long time. Though the dumping of waste has become an endless issue, the local bodies have failed to address this issue.

In the absence of a proper waste management system, the residents and people of the nearby areas have dumped waste beside the highway. This not only causes unhygienic conditions but also poses a serious threat to the domestic animals that consume them. With the increase of garbage at the spot, several animals are falling victim to several intestinal and stomach disorders. Pedestrians also find it difficult to walk on these roads due to the stench. Contaminated medical waste can cause hazardous germs to multiply rapidly and drastically increase the spread of disease.

A man named Nagraj from Hasiru Dala was seen holding placards at Adyar to raise awareness on this issue. The placards stated ‘Do not throw waste on roadside’ and ‘The river is slowing nearby, do not throw garbage’. He has been standing there since a week from early morning to 11 am.

“Due to the carelessness of a few people, the rest are facing problems,” he says.

He has collaborated with a few schools and colleges to clean the waste and maintain the cleanliness here. A week ago, students from a particular institution cleaned the waste which was piled up beside the highway at Kannur. “The local bodies should take the initiative to tackle this issue. People should also join hands to bring about betterment,” he says.

He also said, “We will conduct a clean-up drive in the coming days throughout the stretch of Kannur-BC road highway where the locals and local administration will be involved.

Few years ago, Nagaraj was also seen holding placards at Netravati Bridge Thokkottu which has now improved a lot in terms of dumping waste.

The Adyar gram panchayat has now stepped in and put up banners on the Adyar-Kannur highway stretch which says stringent action will be taken for dumping waste.

Instead of the placard advertising "not to dump the waste here", it would been better if it points to the nearest garbage bin in the vicinity.

Large scale dumping of garbage across the road is because there is no municipal facility in these areas to dispose the same. Big garbage bins (cut water pipes of very big diameter) should be placed at every two kilometre distance so people can dump their garbage in them; these bins should be cleared every week, without fail, by the municipality! DURING RAINY SEASON THIS GARBAGE WILL GET LEACHED AND THE POISONOUS WATER WILL SEEP INTO THE ADJACENT RIVER NETRAVATHI, WHICH CAN TURN INTO A VERY DANGEROUS SITUATION FOR PEOPLE USING THIS WATER SOURCE FOR DRINKING PURPOSES!!

What a misuse of a place ?And whom it belongs? And Panchayat has no responsibility to improve the situation ?Poor fellow standing lonely holding plakat .Noone is helping or giving any notice of it.Very sad .We are self responsible to destroy our nature.Atleast a high fence would help a bit not to throw the waste there.Better Gram Panchayat keep a Big waste bin to throw the waste and collect it every week .so that surroundings remain clean.Keep a hidden camera so that know who are miscrants doing this work.People self can seperate their own waste and produce manure out of rest vegetable rest food with old paper together.Bunt not plastic bags.Your own cows are getting sick eating such waste from roadside.Where are these Dals or some famous pees? They too can help here instead of going back of jihadis or girls.

The main reason of throwing waste is due to untimely collection of waste from the local administration, they come once in a week n give funny reason for the delay. Best option is having a dumpyard every kilometre so that people can come n dump waste at these dumpyard in case the waste is not collected in time.

Have seen these piling up since so many months now. Have been wondering why there has never been a dustbin all through these years. Is there a municipal van allotted to pick up dumps? Furthermore, there is also a particular road leading to the Bantwala Railway Station (near Lions Rotary Club) which is always littered with thrash on either side of the road making it extremely difficult to pass that stench area. Another spot is at Pachinadka where locales enter the forested area with huge black garbage plastics and fling it midway.

This is happened because now there is no garbage dumping bin in respective area as it was placed every where. It was vanished as now a days all garbage's are collected from door to door by muncipal corporation designated vehicle. This resulted in some of the areas there is no place to dump left over thrash and peoples are used to dump these at road side gutter or places which is vacant and unmanned. This resulted in heavy pile of thrash in gutters and these are clogged during monsoon rains. Those dumped near road side are tends emit heavy smell due to rot. Also government banned firing of dry thrash in the name of environment and left over dead leaves from plants, and dead trees branches are not collected by municipal corporation, so now where these thrashes will be dumped? Peoples now dumping thrashes every as no place to dump these.
