DCM meets BDA Chief, others on Justice Nazir’s direction to resume Shivaram Karanth Layout work

Bengaluru, Jun 8: Deputy Chief Minister D K Shivakumar on Thursday held discussions with Justice A V Chandrashekar and Bengaluru Development Authority top officers over the direction of the former Supreme Court judge S Abdul Nazir’s direction in August last year to resume work on the Shivaram Karanth Layout works.

Shivakumar, who is also the minister for Bengaluru Development, visited the BDA office in Bengaluru held discussions with Justice Chandrashekar, former BDA Commissioner Jaikar Jerome, former DGP S T Ramesh, who are members of the high level committee probing the Layout works, along with BDA Chairman Rakesh Singh and Commissioner Kumar Nayak.

Speaking to media persons after the meeting, the Deputy Chief Minister said the State Government wants to ensure that all the persons whose lands were acquired for 650 acre layout in the city, must get suitable compensation while ensuring that the BDA does not suffer losses.

The government wants protect the interests of the poor and middle class families, who had applied for the sites in the layout, he said.

Shivakumar said he has taken up the inspection of the entire city to ascertain for himself the preparedness of all the civic agencies to face the onset of monsoon and prevent problems of flooding.

The government has asked the officers to prepare an action plan with a time-bound schedule to tackle water-logging, flooding and clearing of the drains and rajakaluves, which was of utmost importance, he said adding: ``I want to ensure that the fair name Bengaluru is not tarnished due to the failure of the officers to take timely action.’’

He visited the Yamalururajakaluve construction work in Mahadevapur, the construction of the sluice gate to prevent drainage flow into the Bellandur lake and also the Rainbow Housing complex in Varthur, which witnessed problems due to flooding and submersion last year.

All the drainage works and desilting of lakes and canals must be done forthwith, he said.
