Anna Hazare Phenomenon Unite India on Corruption

Support Builds up in Bangalore for Hazare's Fast Against Corruption

Bangalore, Apr 7 (IANS):
An indefinite fast by a group of people in Bangalore in support of the anti-corruption campaign by social activist Anna Hazare continued for the third day Thursday with more than 300 people gathering to express solidarity.

A crowd collected at Freedom Park in the heart of the city to express support for the four people on fast, one for the third day and the other three for the second day Thursday.

Veteran Kannada theatre personalities like 'Master' Hirannaiah and Bhargavi Narayan joined the protest that started all over India three days back with Anna Hazare taking the lead with his fast-unto-death at New Delhi to demand a role for the civil society in drafting a stringent anti-corruption Lokpal Bill.

In the evening, the protesters are to hold a candlelight vigil against corruption and in support of a strong law to curb growing graft in the country.

The country-wide protest is also supported by religious leader Sri Sri Ravi Shankar, founder of the Art of Living.

"The Art of Living Foundation and I have always stood with him (Hazare) in his fight against corruption and work in social transformation. He is the voice of millions of Indians and I sincerely hope that the prime minister takes immediate steps to form the joint committee for the Lokpal Bill," Ravi Shankar said in a statement from Germany.

The Bangalore-based Public Affairs Committee, a not-for -profit organization which campaigns for good governance, said it had a written to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh urging him to 'urgently set up the joint committee to redraft the Lokpal Bill".

"The groundswell of support to Anna Hazare's fast is not only on account of the dissatisfaction with the Lokpal Bill but also because people are fed up with the insensitiveness and corruption in the public services of the country," the letter by PAC founder Samuel Paul said. The letter was released to the media.

Former chief justice of India M.N. Venkatachalaiah is the chairperson of PAC board of directors.

Anna Hazare Phenomenon Unites India on Corruption

by Florine Roche
Daijiworld Media Network

April 7, 2011: It has become a craze for people especially for politicians in India to quote and talk about Mahatma Gandhi and what he stood for but it required a noted social activist and Gandhian  Anna Hazare to coalesce people of all hues, through  his Gandhian method of fast-unto-death against corruption at Jantar Mantar in New Delhi from April 5, 2011.

Anna Hazare is demanding passing of the Jan Lokpal Bill drafted through a civil society initiative rather than the truncated version of the Lok Pal bill in its present form.  He has been demanding setting up of a joint committee with 50 per cent representation for citizens and 50 percent for the government for formulation of a strong Lok Pal Bill which has been languishing in the parliament since 1968.  Anna Hazare has rejected an appeal from Prime Minister and is bent upon continuing with his fast until the government comes out with a full-fledged anti-corruption bill. Anna Hazare who is on his third day of the fast says he is ready for a dialogue if the government and if Union Minister Kapil Sibal is to be believed the government is willing to look into the demands of the agitators.

This fast-unto-death by Anna Hazare is becoming a movement with masses including the youth and the students taking to streets in different parts   of the country in support of Anna Hazare.  The first casualty of his movement is that Union Minister for Agriculture Sharad Pawar has backed out from the Group of Ministers (GoM) that is drafting the bill on corruption after Hazare and his supporters pointed out the shady past of Paward vis-à-vis corruption.  The movement therefore, is going in the right trajectory but that is going to stop the activists from going ahead with their struggle till the goal is achieved in what is rightly termed as the second struggle for freedom – freedom from corruption.

Massive Support

72-year old Anna Hazare’s fast-unto-death assumes significance especially at a time when corruption charges of gigantic proportions have erupted against ministers, politicians and their cahoots, bureaucrats and many others at the centre as well as in many states.  Under this background Anna Hazare’s demand for a comprehensive anti-corruption bill to bring the corrupt to book has certainly caught the eyeballs of all concerned citizens who loathe the extent to which graft has made inroads in each and every aspect of our lives.  It is matter of gratification that in this fight against corruption Hazare has been supported and joined by scores of people including reformist Swami Agnivesh, former IPS officer Kiran Bedi, Baba Ramdev, RTI activist Arvind Kejriwal, Justice D S Tewatia activist Mallika Sarabhai and public leader Sandip Pandey and thousands of common people including students, housewives, organizations, business groups and tinsel town celebrities, including Amir Khan, Anupam Kher, Mahesh Manjrekar,  is indeed laudable.

The youth of this country, a mighty force, who have been silent and more cynical until now, have given the movement the required impetus and they have been very vocal in voicing their anger and frustration.   This movement has also struck a right chord among Indians abroad  also and is sure to put the government on the saddle, especially at a time when the 5 states are going for polls this month.

In Delhi where Hazare is on a fast supporters held banners and it is believed that six lakh people have vouched their support through a signature campaign to the fight against corruption spearheaded by Hazare and the number is only swelling.    What is more, support for Hazare is not confined to Delhi alone.  In Mumbai activists of   ‘India Against Corruption’ also sat on fast at Azad Maidan in support of Hazare.  Several others have pledged support through text messages and mails. In Mumbai it is believed that about 30,000 people have registered on the website to join the hunger strike. More than 160 people, most of them commoners,  have joined Anna Hazare in his fast and the number is sure to swell as the movement is becoming a nationwide stir.   Support from public has also come in from Pune, Ahmedabad, Bangalore, Hyderabad and 400 other cities of the country.

Of course many politicians and political parties have jumped into the bandwagon showing solidarity with Hazare but Hazare has steadfastly refused to share the dais with them. For Hazare it is obvious that these political parties have an axe to grind as their support has more to do with the political mileage they want to accrue by cornering the ruling government rather than their disquiet over   growing corruption.

Lok Pal vs Jan Lok Pal

The Lok Pal  that aimed at bringing the Prime Minister’s office and ministers under the purview of an anti-corruption ombudsman was first introduced in 1968 but has been rehashed, reintroduced and  abandoned several times e 8 times since then, to be precise.  But the bill has never been passed by the parliament in the last 4 decades.  The bill is supposed to provide enough powers for people to bring to book corrupt politicians and their cronies and bureaucrats.

The government which is now trying to introduce the bill in the parliament is too weak as it gives no powers for the people to act against the corrupt and those who go after lucre.  It is riddled with umpteen loopholes,   thus nullifying the very purpose of introducing the bill.  It will be another toothless organization because the bill envisages the Lok Pal cannot take up any complaint against MP’s on its own without obtaining a clearance from the Speaker.  Lok Pal has no power to act if it finds the accused guilty but has to send it to the Speaker for action, which is not binding on the Speaker. In other worlds the bills only aims to make mockery of the people who want to put a full stop to the massive corruption pervading the country.

Considering the evasiveness of the bill an alternative bill Jan Lok Pal Bill was drafted by civil rights group comprising Justice Santhosh Hegde (Lokayukta of Karnataka), Senior Supreme Court Advocate Prashant Bhushan and Aravind Kejriwal after series of consultations with public and social activists.  This bill has been supported by Anna Hazare and his band of supporters and they are now demanding the implementation of this tougher bill drafted by the civil rights groups.

The Prime Minister is of course caught in a catch 22 situation and has set up a sub-committee under minister A K Antony to have a relook at the bill.  On an earlier occasion when Hazare and his supporters had met the Prime Minister he had offered to pass on their suggestions to group of ministers (GoM) drafting the bill.  But these activists disapprove this move because (GoM) consists of Ministers like Sharad Pawar who is mired in corruption himself, Veerappa Moily, (who is responsible for drafting a weak Lok Pal bill and Kapil Sibal who famously said he did not see any revenue loss in 2G Spectrum case or rather feigns innocence as if the word corruption is alien to him.  So one can imagine what changes or suggestions this (GoM) would have been able to incorporate in the bill considering the fact that many of them are facing corruption charges against them.
For long, Indian politicians and bureaucrats have looted the people of this country with impunity.  We have seen some of the biggest scandals in the recent past involving not one or two crores but lakhs of crores.  It is believed that the scandals unearthed so far are only a tip of the iceberg.

Anna Hazare with his Gandhian method of protest has certainly dovetailed Indians with the common cause of rooting out corruption.  This protest has certainly found resonance in every nook and corner which is an indication of the maturing of our democracy.  It also shows that if citizens unite for a common cause, they can certainly bring about a revolution and make it clear to the politicians that in a democracy it is the voice of the people that matters and not that of the miniscule minority ministers who burgeon their wealth and lead a easy life at the cost of tax payers.  Hazare has now provided that momentum to Indians, who have been on the look out for someone to lead them in the right direction.  Mahatma Gandhi could move the mighty British out of India by non-violent methods with the support of the masses.  Anna Hazare united Indians with his Gandhian method of protest in his crusade against corruption.

Yes All common people when united can root out corruption. Politicians divide people on religions to for cover up corruption. No politician should be trusted. He who named in corruption has no morality to be in power. The accused corrupter makes series of speeches in public and all media publishes corrupter's speech as if the curruptee is saint. Here the media also doesn't want to write against corrupt government for the fear of loss in government revenue that comes in the form of advt.So Govt,Govt chellas and media- all join and praise the govt.and present it to the people that the the govt is good. What people like Santhosh Hegde can do?. there for it is the common man who can reverse the case. I am also a common man and I denounce corruption .I am joining unite India on corruption.

India is one of the top three economies in the world, but looking at corruption, India sinks to number 87 refer to the Corruption Perceptions Index.Corruption plays a significant role in keeping poverty, illiteracy and other social ills in place.Lokpal Bill has been introduced eight times in Parliament since 1968. All the eight versions have been very weak. Even these weak versions have not been passed so far because Lokpal Bill seeks to investigate politicians.THE ACTION MUST BE TAKEN IMMEDIATELY

All politicians are power hungry, Each party want to rule The District, State and Country. Why?? You think they love India and want to serve Indians. You got it all wrong. They all want to be in power because they just want to the L O O T. One will hail democracy and another will hail Hindutva. Once they reach to the top, start counting money. will forget the democracy and Hindus.
What are the eligibility rules for contesting elections?? Money
What are the rules for getting a Policeman's Job?? Money
What is the criteria to get any kind of permission from govt.?? Money
What rules you should know to get a driver's License? Money
If corruption is eradicated from INDIA, then poverty will be eradicated from INDIA. Indians wont have to look for job in foreign countries. Indians will be healthy / wealthy and self sufficient people.
We came out from the clutches of British but, trapped under our own selfish leaders.
Crores of Indians passed away and when they lived, they hoped that this guy will do better and that guy will do better. We, all Indians live in a dream world hoping that some one will do better. We all clap to the speaches of wicked politicians.
LETS JOIN HANDS TOGETHER AND LETS BUILD A CORRUPTION FREE INDIA. LETS SEE IF CORRUPT POLITICIAN DARES TO JOIN POLITICS AND TAKE ALL INDIANS FOR LONG RIDES.

The support that Anna Hazare has galvanised in India and across the globe does seem to suggest that the long pending Lok Pal bill will be passed soon with some amendments and will herald the start of a New Freedom for Indian citizens. A freedom from bribery and corruption. Yes at long last we can recall the famous poet’s words….
“Where the mind is lead forward by thee into ever widening thought and action Into that heaven of freedom , my father ,
    let my country awake “

Indeed we pray that this giant (INDIA) will awake after a long slumber of 63 years !!!

George,it is true the nation is sick.Corruption has killed all its goodness.Cronyism is the order of the day.The passing of the bill will however not fulfill the long felt need for a corrupt free society.because all the pillars of Indian democracy have collapsed. The judiciary takes 25 years to finish a case. The legislatures are full of individuals who are at the most unfit as they are the sons and daughters of the same class of corrupts.
Therefore once the Government bends Shri Hazare must not end this agitation. The nation requires a strong ginger movement of young citizens who will ensure the rascals are booked along with their family membersThese families must be banned from standing in elections, for ever, else we will become an oligarchy, which we nearly are presently, ruled by corrupt families.

The "Gates Foundation, which has $80 million worth partnership with Bihar government in health sector, has shown its interest in expanding cooperation in agricultural sector too ... said a beaming Gates while lavishing praise on chief minister Nitish Kumar sitting beside him" (Times of India, March 27 '11). Why does BEGGAR Bihar need Gates' CHARITY? Tamil Nadu gets Indian currency secretly printed in China which is used for numerous freebies to people from food to houses to mixers to color TVs to lap top computers, etc. for bribes to A. Raja and many other things because of which the Tamils have been calling Bihar and U.P. backward and stupid. This is what I said in my Press Release dated January 17, 2011:-

"In my article titled "A Magical Solution to Disaster Relief" I gave the formula: the government should invite any and all individuals and organizations including companies to "Find a need and fill it and be reimbursed at double your cost" in normal times a 50% profit may be enough incentive to provide food, shelter. clothing and services to shanty-dwellers and be reimbursed at 50% over their cost the only condition should be that the goods and services they provide must be ADDITIONAL PRODUCTION and not taken from existing supplies. The shanty-dwellers can also be employed for the production. The government has an unlimited amount of money simply by printing it so long as it is used for PRODUCTION see my article "How India's Economy Can Grow 30% Per Year Or More" which can be found by a Google/Yahoo search with the title. By suppressing any mention of me in the media via K. Subrahmanyam and C.I.A.-RAW, Tamils have been reaping the benefits of my work while denying them to the stupid North Indians who are full participants in this BEGGARING of India. And how has this BEGGARING of India been done? I have described it many dozens of times in these press releases, such as that dated January 30, 2011 and here it goes once more: "I am India's expert in strategic defence and the father of India's strategic program, including the Integrated Guided Missile Development Program. In my blog titled 'Nuclear Supremacy For India Over U.S.', which can be found by a Yahoo search with the title, I have described how the C.I.A. keeps India poor, weak and enslaved: "India's greatest scientist and greatest living Indian publicly tortured in Harvard seminar, systematically and totally starved for up to 3 weeks at a time, made semi-starved and homeless and even blind for years, kept under 24-hour audio and video surveillance as well as surveillance of communications and electrical typewriter and computer use, document creation and photocopying, etc., by satellite for more than past 3 decades, systematically harassed and in poverty and neutralised and robbed of his work at the cost of hundreds of millions of dollars per year, robbed of crores in his money and property in India by C

Sir Anna Hazare, we salute you for the bold leadership taken by you. This is just the beginning. We all are with you and you have rightly said ' I do not believe any political party' as all are feather of the same bird.
The awareness has already started and very significant sign is the youths are supporting your cause in whatever possible way. My request to the youths, please carry this spirit of clean governing spread by Sir Anna Hazare in your own life, no matter whichever position you may render service. You be a role model.
Ashamed to say, the leaders whom we elect are the same one, are leading worst corrupt practice for their own selfish ends. Let there be millions of Anna Hazare be in our great land India. God bless Sir Anna Hazare. Jai Hind.

Hats off to Anna Hazare. Dear Sir even though we Indians are far away from our country (i.e working broad) because of the sins of our politicians, be assured we are in spirit with you. Democracy without good governance is no democracy at all. It is worse than Dictatorship
which was in Tunicia & Egypt and look what happened there. It is high time it happened in India too.
Once again thanks to Mr. Anna Hazare and I request all people in all states of India to support Anna Hazare by taking out peaceful demonstrations on the streets condeming curruption in all Government Departments and against politicians and to press for the enactment of the Anti-curruption Legislation as demanded by r.Anna Hazare.

I think that the people of India have reached the threshold of patience towards the government's inaction against corruption. It is still a very controllable number of people protesting against the government. If the government does not act quickly and pass the Jan Lokpal Bill, we might see another Tunisia or Eqypt happening.
Most of the politicians of our country today are corrupt. At the same time they are protected against any legal action. This is a very sad situation. Like this what is the difference between democracy and dictatorship. Only difference I see is that we have a lot of dictators at the same time.
Mr Anna Hazare is certainly taken up a right cause and representing our struggle to eradicate this menace of corruption. I can see that the Father of our nation Mahatma Gandhi has come back in the face of Mr. Anna Hazare. He has been kind enough to demand 50% representation by politicians, but if you ask any comman man, he will not want to see any politicians on that comitee. All my fellow Indians, Let us all join this noble cause and support Mr. Anna Hazare to Make India clean and Corruption free. Jai Hind

As long as Mr Hazare doesnt belong to any political party Bjp or Cong (as both r only two faces of the same coin )we all should support him & pray that along with the Menace of corruption there should be an end to mixing religion with politics .otherwise this present trend that is prevailing in our country , god forbid ,its only a matter of time that this whole nation will be destroyed by these communal goons for their filthy personal gains ( as exposed by Wikileaks.)
By the way there is no way he is a congressmen ,as he has openly criticized cong leaders.

I am very proud of Anna Hazare and you all supporting him. If countries like Egypt, Libya rise up against their menace of autocrats, then we too Indians can rise up against this menace of corruption. Due to corruption our politician, bureaurats and business men went on to become richer and richer while, we the average Indians are still struggling for decent living. Let this movement be a non political movement. That is where all our strength and unity will come to test. Do not involve any political parties in this movement at any cost. They are all same like vultures waiting to pounce on their prey and have their share of flesh. If we can see throughout the history of the country none of the political party had no record of corruption. Except for few names such as Shastri, Sardar Patel etc, most of the politicians have been busy amassing wealth through all scrupulous means. Sad to say none of them have worked for the welfare of the country or the prosperity of the Indians. There is no point is involving such dirty elements in this people movements. Let us all stand united and rise to the challenge, to give a better present to us and a bright future to our children in this great nation. Jai Hind

It is wrong to attribute Manmohan Singh as clean and non corrupt. He is the 'mukhiya' of the people of India and owes explanation to he country for wrongs done under his stewardship.Though he has no direct involvement in the scams, knowing fully well of modes operandi and keeping quiet, and escaping from the responsibility simply saying 'I do not know' 'I have no information about this' 'my ministers are not involved in the scams' are no lesser than direectly involving in the scam itself.Aiding and abetting the crime is as good as having committed the crime.

One honest and dynamic TV commentator mentioned a short time age, in We the People Debate about curruption "will this be the beginning of another movement, like Egypt" and after that I have not seen this person for quite some time on TV.
I'm sure some currupt politicians must have told her boss to keep her out. I am a citizen of India too, but feel ashamed when we talk with with other nationalities about the state of affairs in our country. They say that India is such a rich country and has a lot of potential to shine further, but for our dirty politicians who are selfish and only interested in filling their personal bank accounts and statching away illegally earned money in their Swiss Bank account. If only they were clean, all you Indians need not have to work abroad and I feel this to be absolutely true. Every Indian needs to support Anna Hazare. How many times have we not cried over the corruption in our country and yearned to get rid of it... Well NOW my fellow Indians, This is the beginning of A Corruption-Free India. But that goal wont be achieved unless we all express solidarity with Anna Hazare. I for one cannot take to streets (like many others am sure). But the least we can do is support The Jan Lok Pal Bill and pray to the Almighty that the Government bows down to the Voices of the People. Refuse to back down for petty promises and stand our ground till the bill is passed.
All the best to Anna Hazare. our wishes and prayers are always with you.

This movement started by Anna Hazare needs to be supported by all citizens.

There is no doubt some of the politicians come to politics for business but it is the bureaucracy which is responsible for massive corruption in the country.

I am sure UPA government considers the proposals given by Anna Hazare in formulating the Lokpal Bill.

Today RTI bill has become the important tool in unearthing corruption and similarly strong Lokpal Bill can help in reducing corruption at all levels.

Many politicians and bureaurocrates at Central and State level may go behind bars if this bill comes into force.

The Lokpal Bill as proposed by Anna Hazare and the civil society is very good.
However on reflection, it is not the desirable solution to the scourge of corruption in our society and polity. Lokpal Bill will become operational AFTER an act of corruption has been committed.
The tap root of corruption is Funding /donations to political parties that are not permitted by Company Law. And the accounts of political parties are not subject to Audit.
We as People of India, have to accept that Political parties need money and they should be allowed to collect funds legally. The due use of funds then be audited by CAG or some other structure of good governance.
Over a decade we may be able to make our political system more “honest”

It is high time now that we have to fight corruption and ANNA HAJARE,Gandhian leading in front need support of all citizens of India. It is likely a JP MOVEMENT of the past which brought revolution in political system.Anna Hajare famous for his Gandhian values has Ashram in Maharastra who came to light when he fought against corruptions of then Govt of Pawar.

It may be a coincidence that the incident of 2G,Adarsh,CWG and corruptions of Yeddy has come to the light when Anna sat for fast un to death in Delhi to pressure Central Govt to introduce JAN LOKPAL BILL which was kept in moratorium for a quite long time.

As per Anna and like minded stalewarts of different walks of life, the Lokpal Bill should be drafted by well known specialists rather than politicians. The first causuality is Mr Pawar,Agri minister who was earlier inducted as member for drafting Lokpal Bill.As per Hajare,The Jan Lokpal Bill should be an independent constitutional body having proscuting power(suo-moto power)to bring corrupt politicians and officials to the Rule of Land.Corruptions could be controled if not iradicated fully by bringing JAN LOKAPAL BILL in it's real meaning.

No political party must be allowed to participate in the agitation and it must be restricted to peoples participation. All parties are corrupt and all bureaucrats, public servants and elected representatives and politicians of our country are corrupt and enjoying hightech life on the tax payers money. We must kill corruption for a better India. Even today our blood, our thinking, aout actions, the air we breathe, the food we eat, water we drink, person we talk have become corrupt. All civilized Indians must support his movement morally and financially. This agitation should spread all over India like wild fire and engulf and burn the corruption in its flames. Daiji, please give us information on the bank accounts of these organisers so that I can do a little of "aliluseve". In the JanLokpal bill we must include a provision that electorate should have the right to call back their representative and their representation null and void. Secondly there should be a minimum education criteria and age limit for elected representatives. We have been ruled by fools, lunatics and corrupt representatives. One can fight and become an elected representative only for two terms and not more during ones life time. We need better understanding of democracy. Peoples movement and voice cant be suppressed. In any democracy people are the king makers and elected representatives must be responsible for the electorate in their public life. We need to change India which is the need of hour.
