Mangalore, Dec 14: Stressing the importance of ‘Nanotechnology’ and Nanoscience’, minister for higher education Dr V S Acharya called upon the young minds to understand the significance of nano technology to compete with dynamic world.

He was addressing his inaugural speech at a three-day international workshop on “Applications of Nanotechnology to Energy, Environment and Biotechnology” (NANO EEB) organized by St Aloysius College at Eric Mathias Hall on Tuesday December 14.

He added in ancient days too people unearthed its significance by inventing number of machines but lack of knowledge on nano technology resulted slow pace of inventions.

Dr Acharya said there is a brighter future for nanotechnology and nanoscience in our state, as the government has prioritised higher education sector.

Prof K V Rao from the materials science department of Royal Institute of Technology, Stockholm, Sweden, after releasing a book of abstracts, said that Nanotechnology is one of the most active research areas that encompass a number of disciplines including civil engineering and construction materials.

Around 200 people including, faculty members, speakers, research scholars, PG and UG students are taking part in the workshop. There will be 35 invited lectures including oral and poster presentations in the three day mega meet, which will conclude on December 16.

Dr Leo D’Souza, convenor, NANO-EEB, delivered the introductory address. Fr Joseph Rodrigues, rector of St Aloysius College blessed the occasion. Prof A M Narahari, registrar, Dr Monica Sadananda, joint organizing secretary and Dr Richard Gonsalves, treasurer among others were present.

Fr Swebert D’Silva, Principal welcomed the gathering. Dr Narayan Bhat, organizing secretary of the workshop delivered the vote of thanks.
