Political games: Mangaluru limping in Smart City project

Daijiworld Media Network - Mangaluru (MS)

Mangaluru, Sep 27: In the last four years, only seven projects worth Rs 10.62 crore have been completed under the Smart city project of this city.

Though Rs 301 crore grant has been released for the development of this city as Smart City, only Rs 41.43 crore have been spent so far. Out of the 47 projects planned, only seven are completed. Another 26 projects estimated to cost Rs 558.78 crore are in progress. Four projects costing Rs 81 crore are in the tender stage. Five projects worth Rs 259.54 crore are in the CPR stage.

The Smart City projects are constantly getting changed as per the changes carried out by the ruling party in the state. When the coalition government was in power in 2018, Kudroli slaughterhouse was included in the Smart City project. However, as the BJP wrested power from the coalition government, Kudroli abattoir project was dropped and Padil road project was included.

Even in the city corporation, the power has been transferred into the hands of BJP from Congress and the list of projects is just getting longer.

Isaac Vas, president of Kanara Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KCCI) says, "Works that are complementary to the development of the city are taken up by the administration. In addition, a proposal for an IT park at an estimated cost of Rs 60 crore at Derebail on 2 lac sq ft area is agreed upon."

Over Rs 200 crore marked for the Smart City is kept in a nationalized bank under fixed deposit. The bank had gifted a car to the MD of Smart City, which had created quite a discussion in the political circles of the city recently.

Mangalore had hitherto been developed by the private sector without much government involvement. Instead of wasting tax payers money on fictitious projects like Smart City, let our city continue development by the private establishments, in a well planned manner under the supervision of MCC. In future the greatest setback to the development of our so called smart city will be water scarcity. This will be the serious negative impact of Yettinahole Project. At least in this part of the country Smart City and Yettinahole Projects cannot go hand in hand. Diversion of Nethravathi River will have to be stopped if Mangaluru is to be developed further. Otherwise it will be wise now to bring a halt to further development of our Mangaluru.

If anyone who has travelled across karnataka, you can easily say that Mangalore is 2nd most devloped city in karnataka and has few things better than bangalore too. Mangalore must ask for metro rail or atleast monorail from state govt because competitor cities of Mangalore such as Pune, nagpur, lucknow etc maybe geting it sooner

What a waste of tax payers' money by political parties and all those involved in this project. I know few top officials, well educated and qualified Engineers etc, involved in the Smart City Project who are clean, non-corrupt and efficient. But then they are not Govt officials, hence they will have no voice and they have to listen to the un-educated babus.
So to all those of us who have been dreaming of a Smart City Mangalore, think smart and be smart in our lives and learn to accept bitter facts of every Govt that comes to power. It is immaterial if it is BJP or Congress, it is Politics after all.
Present MCC Officials are busy renaming roads and circles and are not bothered about any development plans for the city. But hope most of you in this platform agree that one thing this Govt is BEST at: giving speeches with lies loaded with it. Unfortunately we have people who believe them and still support their lies. Their crores worth schemes are mostly in talks and in words but not in deeds.
God Save us from these Politicians. Unless we the people do not get up and start voicing against these things, nothing will happen.

Smart city project is another way of siphoning off public money into private hands. Mangalore, probably is yet to work out the details of siphon. So, the delay.
I read in the newspapers, about new industrial parks, new bus rapid transit systems, a police command control centre, airport modernisation and few other projects proposed in Hubli-Dharwad. Gulbarga has a proper test track for driver licensing. Mysuru's layouts are well planned.
Nothing for Mangalore. Even Indian railways is screwing Mangalore. Despite BJP being in the centre, state, corporation and what not. And Mangalore is been voting for BJP for donkey's years. All that it has got is "chombu".
Where are leaders like U Srinivas Mallya?

The other cities of Karnataka you mentioned is actually not as developed as Mangalore. Even those are just eyewash from politicians of those areas to fool local people. What Mangalore can ask now is sanction of Metro or mono rails from BC road to Mangalore city to surathkal line...But the question is will private bus operators mafia allow this development to happen??....

Its like a Mohammed Bin Tuglaq Project. Every now and then according to the whim and fancy of the Political parties which come to power. Viewing the present condition of Mangalore it will take nearly 100 years to call mangalore a Smart City. Its just like Thirukana kanasinanthe (beggars dream). The works undertaken under Smart Ciity Project are lagging behind and go in a snails pace. Everywhere we can see this trend.

Our politicians are good for nothing.
The same people were not able to save the Mangalore pride Bank which was benchmark for Mangalore. What they will to with smart city only filling their home Banks. That's it.
Don't expect anything form them. Only publicity even if the move 1 bag of stone it will be presented like it was 1000tons of stone.🤭

What a shame for mangloreians. Till today our MCC has not able to construct a good vegetable, Fish and Meat market, and proper bus stand. Now after independence our MCC has completely failed. Such a small city Karwar, two days back they opened every posh fish market. Our MCC officials went many times to study about GOA fish market. ( I think they went for jolly trip) Now we have to learn a lesson from Karwar. Smart city will be a dream only. This what I believe.
