Mangalore: Beary Sahitya Academy Awards for Three Eminent Personalities

Mangalore, Mar 19: The Karnataka Beary Sahitya Academy announced its honorary awards for the year 2009 on Friday March 19.  Veteran writer Ahmed Noori, multi- language scholar Abul Hasan Muhammad Maulavi, and Ismail Ustad Suribail, teacher of Beary folk art ‘Daff’ will receive the honour.

M B Abdul Rahiman, chairman of the academy, announced the names at a press meet and said that the selection was done in a meeting where all the academy members were present.

Providing details of the awardees, he said that Ahmed Noori is a resident of Bangalore and has been singing and writing Beary songs over the past five decades.

“Some of his songs are popular among Beary speakers and he has also written several books including ‘Maikala’, and ‘Hijari Samsmarana Sanchike’ in Kannada. He has translated the Holy Quran into Kannada”, said Rahiman adding that Noori has worked as a journalist with several news papers. 

“Abul Hasan Maulavi is known for his religious programmes (Matha Prasanga) in Beary language. ‘Muttumale’, his collection of ‘Hadees’ on Beary language, and his several translations into Kannada from Arabic and Urdu are popular”, he added. 

“Ismail Ustad Suribail has been serving as a teacher of Beary folk art ‘Daff’ and is a resident of Suribail in Bantwal taluk. He has served society by performing Daff and tried to keep alive the folk art with more than 900 students from the Beary community”, said Rahiman. 

The awards will be presented on Wednesday March 31 in a programme at Town Hall in the city. The honourary award consists of Rs 10,000 in cash, a memento, and a citation.

Members of the academy B M Ichlangod, Hamza Malar, secretary of  Kannada Cultural Department Mangala V Naik, and  Chandrahas Rai B, registrar of the academy, were present at the press meet.

    Congratullations... Ahmed Noorie is a great personality and because of him a lot of peoples become educated. He is a good teacher too....Ahmed Noori[1] aka Abu Raihan Ahmed Noori[2] is a prominent writer and journalist who belongs to the Beary community of Mangalore in Dakshina Kannada in South India.

    He was born and grew up in Mangalore but currently lives in Bangalore. He has written books in local Beary bashe and Kannada language. His book, Maikala, a documentary about the culture Beary community of Mangalore, has been cataloged by the largest library in the world, the Library of Congress at Washington, D.C., USA.[3] He was also part of a six member team of scholars who, for the first time, translated the meaning of the Quran to Kannada language in 1978 [4] He edited several periodicals such as "Sandesha", "Kitaab" and "The Message". He contributed extensively to the Sanmarga weekly Kannada magazine. He was also one of the founding members of the Beary's Welfare Association in 1988 Thank you Karnataka Beary Sahitya Academy.
    May Allah the Almighty grant him good health. Ameen.
