Daijiworld Media Network - Kozhikode (SHP)

Kozhikode, Aug 7: Over 20 deaths, including the pilot and co-pilot, have died in the Air India flight catastrophe where the plane skidded off the runway. It is said to have dropped about 35 feet into a gorge. Over 140 more are reportedly injured while some others are reported to be critical. Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his anguish over the tragedy which has struck the state.

Meanwhile, Home Minister Amit Shah directed the NDRF to reach the site at the earliest and assist in the rescue operations.

In a conversation with the PM, Kerala CM Pinarayi Vijayan informed that the state government was taking all the necessary steps to provide treatment to those injured.

The Directorate General of Aviation has ordered a detailed probe into the incident.

Kozhikode, Aug 7: Air India Express flight that was carrying 190 passengers onboard has reportedly skidded off the runway at Kozhikode.

The incident took place on Friday, August 7 amid heavy rainfall in Kerala's Kozhikode. As per sources, rescue operations are underway.

The flight was coming from Dubai and was due to land in Kozhikode.

Capt Dipak Vasant Sathe (Pilot)

One of the pilots of the aircraft is believed to have been killed in the mishap. The front portion of the aircraft had split open due to the impact of the crash.

As per sources, all the passengers have been evacuated.

Images from the accident site showed the aircraft split into two pieces with debris all over the runway. According to initial reports, at least, 40 passengers are believed to be injured.

The Air India Express flight AXB1344, B737 from Dubai to Calicut was part of the Vande Bharat Mission, was about to land when the accident happened. The flight had 174 passengers, 10 infants and four crew members.

The Kozhikode airport is a tabletop airport like the one in Mangaluru. A local MLA who visited the spot said that many passengers have been admitted in hospital with injuries and luckily the plane did not catch fire.

I am at a loss to know from where some of the readers get the information from. One of them says that the aircraft involved in the accident was 13 years old and was delivered to the airline in 2006. The Times of India reports that this aircraft was just 2 years old.

Our country will prosper once we start valuing human life irrespective of caste, creed ,economic or political status. How many incidents like this before we start working towards it earnestly?
That said, we have been really good at ordering probe and setting up commissions.

    1) Hypothetical recommendations that have never been implemented anywhere in this planet

After going through all the comments, I can only add my bit here. It is said that the officials had been warned about the potential dangers table top airports like Calicut held, about ten years ago. This was done close on the heels of the air crash in Mangalore in 2010 and if no action has been taken even after a decade, what does it speak of our earnestness to improve? God knows, how many more accidents will have to take place for the government to move.

laymen are not competent to conjecture on cause of the very sad tragic crash...at most personal opinions...

however, passengers of air india / indian airlines know the following...

    1. air crafts are like dabba...antiquated and not maintained well

    2. logistics very bad, late arrivals, sometimes expected departure time not known even to their staff, misleading/wrong information by staff... delays are rule rather than exception...

    3. poor quality response to passengers on ground and in cabin

    4. cabin crew looking like "uncle/auntie", lacking energy and enthusiasm...

    5. poor quality food on board..

In Mumbai, D N Road/Fort area, many compliment items with "Air India" logo being sold on street / flea market...these are basically meant for passengers as compliments, however being diverted for sale surreptitiously...

Its hard to believe that Dipak Sathe is no more. He was pilot of Air India Express carrying passengers from Dubai in 'Vande Bharat Mission', which skidded off the runway at Kozhikode International Airport yesterday night.

What is learnt is as follows:
    Landing gears didn't work.
Ex IAF pilot made three rounds of airport to empty the fuel which saved plane from catching fire. That’s why there was no smoke seen coming from the crashed aircraft.
He turned off the engine right before the crash.
He belly landed after the 3rd iteration.
    The right wing was ruptured.
The Pilot martyred but saved life of 180 co-passengers.

Deepak was an experienced aerial operator with 36 years of flying experience. A passout of NDA, topper in the 58th course and an awardee of 'Sword of Honour', Dipak served Indian Air Force for 21 years before joining as a Commercial Pilot with Air India in 2005.

He called me just a week before and was jovial, as always. When I asked him about the 'Vande Bharat' Mission, he was proud of bringing back our countrymen from Arab countries. I asked him,"Dipak, do you carry empty Aircraft since those countries are not allowing entry of passengers?" He had replied," Oh, No. We carry fruits, vegetables, medicines etc to these countries and never the aircraft flies to these countries empty." That was my last conversation with him.

He survived in air crash in early nineties when he was in Airforce. He was hospitalised for 6 months for multiple skull injuries and nobody thought that he will fly again. But his strong will power and love for flying made him clear the test again. It was a miracle.

He leaves behind his wife and two sons, both pass outs of IIT Mumbai. He is a son of Brigadier Vasant Sathe who stays in Nagpur along with his wife. His brother, Capt Vikas, was also an Armyman who laid his life while serving in Jammu region.

A soldier lays his life to save the lives of his countrymen.
It reminds me of a poem

    1. why Kozhikode airport authority gave green signal to land when weather was not good . and why dint they not inspect that landing runway .
    2. why captain took decision to land . when he already took two round above the airport before landing. ...
captain could have taken decision that it was not safe to land , and he could have divert the plane to other near by airport in Kerala .

There are financial costs involved, if a loss making airline like Air India diverts its flights and cannot absorb further costs. Also, not to mention an inquiry with higher-ups, and probably a negative remark against the pilots competency, which could affect his promotion.

If two times before they aborted landing, even if the landing gear had failed the captain should have diverted the flight to nearby safest landing zone. It's not matter of promotion or enquiry. The pilots first responsibility is to take off and land safely, all other issues come secondary. According to international laws an aircraft if declares mayday should be given all clearances as requested by the pilots at all costs...

Tabletop airports are always a threat any day as predicted by late Shri Rajiv Gandhi former PM when he visited Mangalore. Thereafter the Mangalore plane tragedy killing all the over 150 passengers happened. Now another accident in Kozhikode. The Aviation Ministry should find a way to either warn the pilots not to land by diverting the aircraft to a safer airport or find a way to make visibility better for a safe landing especially when visibility is poor. A study of the data on weather conditions that caused accidents would definitely give some light on safety measures. Thankfully God grace saved the aircraft from catching fire which incidentally happened in Mangalore killing all. Nevertheless, a tragedy that struck the passengers who had almost reached home but couldn't due to the mishap. May God heal those in critical condition and comfort the families of those dead. May those who lost their lives RIP.

Please allow me to correct you :

The Mangalore air crash wasn't the result of skidding, but miscalculation of the pilot while ascending as he did not get the angle to land so he lifted up. During this course, the wing of the aircraft hit an object, it in turn damaged the wing hence the aircraft lost balance from one side and therefore slid towards the gorge.

    Painful memories.

Two factors might have played from what I saw in other news. After couple of attempts, the pilot tried to land from the west side of the runway heading to east side of the runway which is not the normal landing. This will push the aircraft further due to tailwinds coming from the sea side. Secondly, lack of safety buffer space on the east side of the runway. I would think, both Kerala government and central aviation ministry should be responsible because, all they needed was to create a safety buffer land of about 300+ meters on the east side and use CAT II or III type of landing system. They are spending so much money on the infrastructure now and the upgrade of these would have made the 9000+ feet runway safer.

Pilot age factor should be questioned. Now a days many young pilots are jobless. RIP DV Sathe.

If there was torrential rain in Calicut. Why the flight took off from Dubai Airport ?. Moreover Red alert was declared in Coastal area. This is due to over confidence of the Pilot put everyone at risk. Why DGCA allowed this flight to take off from Dubai.

Very sad news, praying for everyone. Once again it's Air India and a table top airstrip (like Mangalore accident). In this kind of rain, planes should be diverted to other dry airports by the Air Traffic Controller.

Airforce pilots take undue risk...they are used to taking risk and flying under adverse conditions as military pilots...they some times tend to take risks while flying passenger planes also... out of habit...if a civilian pilot was in command, he would have diverted perhaps...

This pilot Sathe is a decorated airforce ex-pilot....RIP

    KB r,

Almost all US Civilian aircraft Pilots are ex- US Air force Pilots....very disciplined and NEVER bend or break any rules....Some times accidents happens....we should learn to live with it Gracefully...

Don't attribute motives to Pilot till Aircraft Voice Recorder is opened during Investigation....then only we will know exactly what happened....Is it mechanical failure, Pilot error or weather caused this...

    ...Tak...Takk...

Horrible. They must have been eagerly waiting to return to their home land. Also so shocking for those who were waiting for their arrival. 2020 is a year of tragedies. May God have mercy on them.

Similar to Mangalore Air crash ..Table Airport .. Lucky this time the flight did not catch fire.. Maybe good side of heavy rains prevented the fire.
Cant be due to pressure on pilot .... not many flights .Maybe visibility was poor due to heavy rain...

As of now there are confirmed reports that the pilot has died.
Whether condition was not suitable enough, and there were reports that the flight was supposed to get cancelled but given green signal out of pressure.

Just imagine the fate of the pilot, who volunteered for an flight despite bad whether for vande bharath mission.
A hero, but sadly his life was risked at the hands of beauracracy.
