Opposition hits out at Karnataka government over naming bridge after Savarkar

Bengaluru, May 27 (IANS): Ahead of the scheduled inauguration of a city flyover by chief minister B S Yediyurappa on Thursday, Karnataka opposition leaders came out against naming it after Hindutva icon Veer Savarkar.

On Wednesday, Congress leader Siddaramaiah and Janata Dal (S) leader H D Kumaraswamy expressed their opposition to the naming of a city flyover after Veer Savarkar.

The flyover is to be inaugurated on May 28, the birth anniversary of freedom fighter Vinayak Damodar Savarkar, projected as a Hindutva icon.

The opposition feels that instead of Savarkar, who hailed from Maharashtra, the state government should have named the flyover after a freedom fighter belonging to Karnataka.

"The urgent decision of renaming the Yelahanka upper bridge in the name of Savarkar is enough proof that the administration is not in the hands of the elected state government but the hands of a puppeteer behind the stage," tweeted former chief minister Siddaramaiah.

He termed the government decision as anti-people and criticized the ruling BJP for seeking Opposition support.

Another former chief minister, H D Kumaraswamy termed the decision a disgrace to Karnataka.

"The state government's decision to nominate Savarkar's name for the Yelahanka bridge is a disgrace to those who have struggled for the country's prosperity," tweeted Kumaraswamy.

"There are many great people who worked for the development of the country before and after independence. Their names could have been used to name the bridge," said Kumaraswamy.

He questioned how state freedom fighters' names are used in other states.

"On behalf of the people of the country, I urge the state government to take a step back from this decision," said the JD(S) leader.

Defending the state government's move, the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party's Karnataka spokesperson S Prakash told IANS, "The Congress cannot digest any name other than the names of the Gandhi family. They are insulting the great freedom fighter for promoting their agenda."

Sir, Savarkar is the British 'stooge' but given title 'Veer' for his trait. I don't where you get your “Entire Political Science”. To regard the rebellion merely as a sepoy mutiny started in late March 1857 a sepoy named Mangal Pandey attacked British officers at the military garrison in Barrackpore. He was arrested and then executed by the British in early April.

When Sepoy mutiny 'Gadar Savarkar' (Born 28 May 1883) not even born. When he was 12, he led fellow students in an attack on his village mosque following Hindu-Muslim riots, stating: "we vandalised the mosque to our heart’s content. He and his brother founded a secret society called Abhinav Bharat Society. Abhinav Bharat was named after the Abhinav Bharat Society, an organisation founded by Vinayak Damodar Savarkar in 1904.
Following the arrest and investigation of Abhinav Bharat members Swami Aseemanand, Lt Col Shrikant Purohit, Sadhvi Pragya Thakur, Lokesh Sharma, Kamal Chauhan, Sunil Joshi and Rajendra Choudhary in connection with the 2006 Malegaon blasts, the organization has been investigated for its alleged role in 2007 Samjhauta Express bombings, Malegaon blasts, Mecca Masjid bombing, Ajmer Sharif Dargah blast and Jalna mosque bomb attack. In all these bombings 147 people were killed.
So Savarkar never inspired any freedom struggle nor Nehru. He collaborated with British when Netaji Bose inspiring freedom struggle.
Please do not use 'Jai Hind' and praise Savarkar who founded two nation theory.

Calling our 1857 independence war as mutiny itself shows disrespect.

First read properly. I never said Savarkar was there in 1857. He coined the term later by writing a book on our first war.

Savarakar was and will always remain Swatantra Veer.

Sir, When you don't the real history of don't try to scribble the wall. When RSS political wing BJP can appease Naturam Godse who killed father of the nation Mahatama Gandhi and gave ticket to terrorist like Prgyaya Singh Takur who appreciated the act of terror on record, praising Savarkar by world's largest democratic party is not an surprise.
Both RSS and its poltical wing BJP symbolically the praise 'Bharat mata' with slogan. When it come to real nationalism they openly support the 'Gadar Savarkar' who sided with British to kill our own freedom fighters.
Time and again BJP has exposed supporting the British raj and personification of traitors who signed mercy petition and submit themselves to for the colonials who caused great 'Bengal Famine' that killed more four million Indians.

Savarkar was a British stooge and biggest 'anti-national' if ever alive today.
    Here is the the list of traits;
    1. ‘Hindu Nationalists’ believe in the two-nation theory like the Muslim League. He propagated as early as 1937 that Hindus and Muslims were two different nations. While delivering the presidential address to the 19th Hindu Mahasabha session at Ahmedabad.
    2. Hindu Nationalists decry and denigrate the Indian national flag. On the eve of Independence RSS organ used the following language against the Tri-colour, the new National Flag of India:
The people who have come to power by the kick of fate may give in our hands the Tricolour but it never be respected and owned by Hindus. The word three is in itself an evil, and a flag having three colours will certainly produce a very bad psychological effect and is injurious to a country.

    3. Hindu nationalists ran coalition governments with the Muslim League in 1942-43. Year 1942 was a critical year in the history of India’s Freedom Struggle. The only political organisations allowed to work were the Hindu Mahasabha and the Muslim League. These two organizations united to serve the rulers and formed coalition governments. It was corroborated by the mentor of RSS. ‘Veer’ Savarkar in his presidential address to the 24th session of the Hindu Mahasabha at Kanpur in 1942

    4. At the end of his life Savarkar wrote a book in Marathi, Six Glorious Epochs of Hindu History. In this book Savarkar Hindutva icon justified the idea of rape as a political tool.

    5. Savarkar pledge his allegiance to the British in return for being released from prison.

    6. At the time when Subhas Chandra Bose was raising his Indian National Army to confront the British in India, Savarkar helped the colonial government recruit lakhs of Indians into its armed forces.

By naming bridge in 'traitor savarkar' BJP decrying and denigrating martyrs like Bhagat Singh, Chandrashekar Azad, Ashfaqullah Khan.

Savarkar...the great patriot, revolutionary. Vande mataram.

Savarkar was sent to Kaalapani and brutally treated, whereas Nehru's jail was furnished with one sofa, library, viisting room, attached toilet etc. This difference itself explains who the British feared most.

    Savarkar inspired Shaheed Madanlal Dhingra.
    Savarakar inspired Shaheed Anant Kanere
Bal Gangadhar Tilak himself recommended Savarakar for the scholarship offer of Shyamji Krishna Verma from UK with a hidden motive of spreading revolutionary activities in London.
Savarkar coined the term First war of Indian independence for 1857, which we used to shamelessly call sepoy mutiny. Our own fight for freedom was called a mutiny, untill Savarakar came in to the scene.
Netaji met Savarakar for inspiration on the INA before departing to Far east.

Savarkar inspired countless patriots in India, UK and also at Kaalapani.

    An interesting bit...

Motilal had told his son Jawahar not to venture near India house in London during his college days there. India house was the hub of revolutionary activity. Had Jawahar come in touch with Savarkar while in London, history would have been different.

    Jai Hind.

My friend Manjesjhwara....what you are telling is commie/ macaulay history which is fed to us by an intellectual eco system who teach us about various lords like dalhousie, curzon, mountbatten....etc but forget our own unsung heroes like Dhingra, Udham singh, Chapekar brothers, Kudiram Bose, Azad, Jatin das, Ullaskar Dutt, Ashfaquallah, Bismil, Baba Savarakar ....any many others.

Holding Savarakar at Kaalapani was becoming untenable for the British. He exposed Kaalapani shame to the outside world. He was an international figure. UK and France even had to fight in an international court over his arrest from French mainland by UK police after his famous sea escape from a ship enroute to India.
British had to close kaalapani much before India became independent because their sham in a remote island was exposed.

Even after shifting to mainland India , British kept in Ratnagiri jail and then as age caught up under house arrest. He inspired countless freedom fighters with his writings and speeches.

Later Nehru tried to fix him in the Gandhi murder case, but the court released him with full honor. If Nehru had conviction he could have appealed his release, but he left it as he knew his false and ill motivated case would not stand.

Height was when Nehru again arrested him during Pak PM Liaqat ali's visit to India, just to please Pak.Even at that old age he was made to suffer in the very same independent country for whose independence he sacrificed all his life. Yet he never uttered anything bad about Nehru. When his followers wanted to appeal internationally against his treatment by Nehru, he stopped them and said Nehru is my PM and nobody shall defame him outside India. Such was his Bharat bhakti.

Naming a road is the least we can do. Honestly he would not even care for such personal benefits. A Barrister in pre independent India he could have had a comfortable life serving the British but he sacrificed everything for our motherland. Vande Mataram.

Naming of city monuments are often the prerogative of ruling party. Hence we've had innumerable monuments, institutions, landmarks, roads, schemes named after Nehru, Indira, Gandhiji, Rajiv by the CONgress and few by names of Morarji, Sardar Patel and JP Narayan by the Janata Parivaar parties. Even the recent canteens were named after Indira and a chain of residential schools by JDS under Morarji. Both were outsiders if the rules were to apply then.
So why make a hullabullo when BJP wants to name monuments after their Icons?

India Gandhi sacrificed her life for the sake of the nation in line of duty. Savarkar was not even heard of till recent times and his contribution for freedom struggle is Zero in fact he was Britishers bootlicking original blind Bhakth. Have some brains when you comment

Because she has the more guts than all of our PM's combined. Not unlike someone claiming they have a chest measuring certain inches.

Indira Gandhi was elected representative of Indians in the Indian republic. Savarkar is despised by many Indians for his communal views.

When BJP wants to give the same honour to Nathuram Godse then why not Savarkar????...Both are mate for each other. Not even once Gandhi mentioned about Savarkar in the freedom fighters list because Savarkar was with Britishers and so was Gandhi assassinated by Nathuram Godse.
