Kaup: Senior citizen ends life on railway tracks

Kaup, Jan 14: Vedavyas Rao (69), a farmer by profession, ended his life by lying across railway tracks and getting crushed by a moving train on Monday January 13. He committed suicide near the railway bridge at Innanje Madumbu near here.

Rao was a resident of Kalyalu Anandavana. He is survived by wife and four daughters.

Vedavyas Rao resided with wife and children. Since the last ten years, he was suffering from bouts of psychological disorders, it is learnt. He was treated for this problem at Padubidri and Udupi, but as his problems continued and got compounded, he often slipped into depression. It is learnt that about two months back, he had tried to jump into a well to end his life. On another occasion, he had gone away, telling his family that he would end his life by getting crushed under a train. In both the occasions, the family members had succeeded in convincing him to change his decision.

In the early hours on Monday, Rao went missing from his house. Later, it was found that he had directly approached the railway tracks passing near his house, and offered himself to be hit by moving train. His skull was found separated from the body.

With help from social worker, Soori Shetty, Kaup police removed the mutilated body from the tracks and sent the same to the mortuary. On the basis of report filed by brother of the deceased, Sridhar Rao, a case stands registered in Kaup police station.
