Kundapur: BCM hostels of taluk functioning in student-friendly environment

Kundapur, Sep 18: Former chief minister of Karnataka late D Devaraj Urs was the hope of backward community people. The D Devraj Urs post-metric BCM hostels for boys and girls, which started with the aim of strengthening the backward community students, gave a new ray of hope for poor students.

Scores of BCM hostels function throughout the state even today. However, the BCM hostels of Kundapur taluk in the district of Udupi are known for their efficient management, student-friendly facilities and able maintenance. The students are getting homely love and affection in these hostels.

Fourteen BCM hostels are functioning in the undivided taluk of Kundapur. Four are functioning in rented buildings. These hostels are situated in Kundapur, Basrur, Koteshwar and Navunda. There are more than one hundred students in each of these hostels. In total there 1025 students in the current academic year. Students who are studying PUC, degree, nursing, engineering, DEd, BEd and other courses live in these hostels. The students are from far off places of the taluk as well as from the outstation districts of Koppal, Raichur, Bijapur, Uttara Kannada and Shivamogga. Students of more than 18 colleges of Kundapur vicinity are residing in these hostels.

There is a well-equipped girls' hostel at Karvikheri of Kundapur. These hostels are better than private hostels when it comes to cleanliness, discipline and time keeping. Those who attend college should be back in the hostel by 6.30 pm. Biometric system is installed here. In addition, CCTV and security personnel are guarding the facility.

The menu consists of various items like provided in one’s own house. The nutrition factor of the food is taken care of also.

There is a library which has all the good book, dailies and magazines. There is a computer section for learning computers. Sports facility is there for physical fitness. Pure drinking water and hot water facility are also provided in these hostels. Use of mobile phones is prohibited in the hostel premises. The hostel premises is kept in a beautiful and attractive manner.

B S Madar, who is serving as a BCM extension officer of the taluk is the one who is greatly influenced by the ideals and thoughts of former CM of the state D Devraj Urs. He got promoted to the present position from that of a hostel warden. He has won the hearts of the students by systematic implementation of discipline, facilities and infrastructure in these BCM hostels.

B S Madar ensures that all the facilities provided by the government reaches the students in time. He personally oversees the food preparation of students. He is extremely concerned about the cleanliness. He thinks that good and clean environment gives positive attitude in the students.

B S Madar, who is a native of Bijapur district, says, "The service in Kundapur and the environment of this place have given me immense happiness. Students of this area are very good. The supervisors and staff at the BCM hostels are also responsible for the hostels to function in a nice manner. Only one hostel has some issue with the drainage system. That needs to be rectified scientifically. A new building is built there. It is going to be inaugurated soon. The cooperation of the people’s representatives and officials has also given immense support in the functioning of these hostels."
