Karkala: Heavy vehicle movement banned on Agumbe Ghat - Confusion prevails

Daijiworld Media Network - Karkala (MS)

Karkala, Aug 18: Deputy Commissioner (DC) of Shivamogga district has sent out an order prohibiting the movement of heavy vehicles of more than 12 tonne capacity on the Agumbe Ghat that lies between Theerthahalli and Udupi on national highway 169A due to incessant rains. However, as no check post is installed in the Udupi district, the drivers of heavy vehicles are in a confused state.

Agumbe police station has received instruction not to allow heavy vehicles to go down from the ghat. However, Hebri police station, which falls under the limits of Udupi has not received any information to this effect. This has created the confusion.

The heavy vehicles that are plying from Udupi to Shivamogga are allowed to use the road on Agumbe Ghat but they are stopped as they reach the Agumbe check post. As no barricade is placed at the entrance of the ghat, which falls under the Udupi district, the heavy vehicle drivers are facing difficulties. When information was sought about this from the SP of Udupi, she said that they have received information from their Shivamogga counterparts and action will be taken on this.
