Mangaluru: Horticulture dept organises 'terrace, kitchen gardening' workshop at Derebail

Mangaluru, Aug 13: Karnataka State Horticulture Department, DK Mangaluru and Most Holy Redeemer Church Derebail on August 11 jointly organised a workshop on 'terrace and kitchen gardening' at Derebail Church residence hall.

Joe Pradeep D'Souza, senior assistant director of Horticulture department, DK Mangaluru and Sri Krishnappa Gowda Paddambailu, office assistant, Government College of BEd Teachers' Training Institute, Mangaluru were the resource persons.

Fr Austin Peter Peres- parish priest Derebail Church, Fr Gratian Alvares- sub-editor Rakhno Weekly, residence priest- Derebail church, Sujit Kukiyan- secretary Konchady Mitra Mandala- Derebail, Sundara Salian- trustee of Shri Vidya Vinayaka Yuvaka Mandala Rajatha Seva Trust, Haleyangadi, Vasudev Shenava- farmer and panchayat member, Edward Coelho- co-ordinator of the programme and vice president of parish pastoral parishad, Derebail and Lizzy Fernandes- secretary of parish council Derebail were present as guests on the dais.



The programme was inaugurated by lighting a lamp by the guests on the dais.

Dora D'Cunha, Pramila Furtado and Juliana Coelho invoked God's presence by a prayer song.

Fr Austin Peter Peres welcomed the gathering and delivered an introductory speech. Edward Coelho introduced the resource persons, Joe Pradeep D'Souza, SADHD, Mangaluru and Krishnappa Gowda Paddambailu- Samajarathna awardee of Mangaluru.

Joe Pradeep D'Souza during the training highlighted the uses of terrace and kitchen gardening, variety of cultivation, vegetable, ornamental garden, flowers and Bounsai cultivation, benefits, preparation of terrace gardening, layers of terrace garden, requirements, equipments used, planting materials, bags, seedlings, care, weeding,pruning, nutrient management, problems faced, proper use of available environment, environment protection, health and hygiene, diseases and their side effects and manure compost preparation and mushroom cultivation were explained with the help of pictorial presentation with demonstration.

Krishnappa Gowda explained a practical way of working in a garden, how to take care and love the plants, talk to them plants, how to prepare compost fertilizer, how to prepare spray by using Neem oil, juice and liquid soap with demonstration.

The vote of thanks was rendered by Lizzy Fernandes.

Felcy Lobo compered the programme.

The programme concluded with a sumptuous lunch.

People from different places namely Derebail, Padil, Urwa, Angelore, Kulur, Haleyangadi irrespective of caste and creed actively participated. There was good response from the crowd.
