Daijiworld Media Network - Mangalore

Mangalore, May 11: In an generous gesture shown by Konkani singing legend Wilfy Rebimbus, has donated his Life Time Achievement award amount of Rs 1 Lakh to Mandd Sobhann  organisers on sunday May 10 2009 for the services rendered by them to promote Konkani Language and culture.

Wilfy being indisposed,  had informed the organisers  of his inability to attend the global music award at Kalangann on Sunday evening.

But the organisers of Mandd Sobhann had decided to present the award on Sunday at 4pm at Wilfy's residence. The Bishop of Bellary, Dr. Henry Dsouza along with Mandd Sobhann leaders  Eric Ozario, Luis Pinto and Roy Castelino  visited  Wilfy's residence "Magadeline" and presented the trophy along with cash prize of Rs 1,00,000.

Wilfy received the award with great humility and gratitude. He thanked  the organisers for considering him for the Lifetime Achievement award.  Wilfy  admitted , it is natural to have professional  differences   among two musical groups, but it is the greatness of Mandd Sobhann who considered him for award , he said.

As a token of  gratitude and appreciation towards the entire Mandd Sobhann team and  for their contribution to Konkani culture , Wilfy has contributed an amount of Rs 1,10,000 to Mandd Sobhann on behalf of United Youngsters  which is completing 50 successful years in October, 2009.

United Youngsters members ,  Prem Lobo, Leslie Rego, Joswin Pinto, Vivian Pinto,  Adolphus Cutinha (Dolla), Claude D'souza and family members of Wilfy Rebimbus were also present.

When daijiworld contacted  Wilfy Rebimbus said he was  overwhelmed with the respect and honor bestowed on him. He always wanted to appreciate the good work done by Mandd Sobhann through Kalangann and Konkani cultural events.  He admired the work of Mandd Sobhann who have been rendering  yeoman service towards promoting  Konkani language and culture from years. He regretted not being able to attend the programme due to ill health.

dear wilfy, i am your fan since we had been in st.joseph''s asylum industrial works jeppu. you were in the welding section and i was a turner and i was discussing about music with your brother gracian. when i saw the great reward you were awarded i was very happy and if i was in india i would take a time to meet you personally. but eventhough i am in saudi-arabia you and your family members are in my prayers.

when i again read that you had contributed the reward to ''''mand sobann'''' i thought within myself why are not more christian millionaires coming forward to encourage our konkani culture and more and and more talented youngsters who are in interior places of the city and not able to see the beautiful world where there is some reward awaiting for someone. may god help you and bring you more sucess.bye

I have yet to come across a generous person like Wilfy. There is no better example of his generosity than creating top class original songs and giving it to someone else to sing for the first time. There is no one in Konkan soil who has created so many singers over the last four decades mainly because of his selfless nature and in this respect Wilfy is simply the greatest. My hats off to United Youngsters for their generous donation towards konkni cause.

We in Canada who know Wilfy very well were delighted by this gesture (we were at a party when this news broke up) and a clear display of “Give to Receive” which he has expressed in many of his songs.

Dear Mr. Joel, it is true that we have never seen anywhere the award has been taken to someone’s house and given it. But we have seen in many cases that the awardees were absent for the award ceremony. Now the point is no one has asked the organiser’s to take this to his house. When they have given it in his house prior to the award ceremony, what is the need to send someone again to Kalaangan? Was there one more award? Please don’t take this in a wrong way. We all know very well about this Legend. He is a person who has given a meaning to the word called ‘Konkani Songs’. Instead of making these types of comments, you and Nanu Marl, please pray for for his good health so that he will get well soon…

Mand Sobhan good in setting quantity records (Guinness) and creates somehow new once - visiting Wilfy''s residence "Magadeline" and presenting the trophy along with cash prize of Rs 1,00,000/-. Being thoughtful, can anybody beat Wilfy Bab’s quality Konkani records and was quick enough to return with Rs.1,10,000/-. A Konkani legend and Pioneer was matured enough to decide whether his family members should attend or not ! Therefore, there should not be any controversy on this petty issue but rather honoring his fine decision to remain out of it.

Dear Mr. Joel, Handing over the Life time achievement award in Wilfy''s residence is the choice of the Organisers. What is it that is bothering you? If the organisers had any problem they would not have given it. Can you tell me if going home and handing over the award is anytime more worth than all the work that Wilfy has done in Konkani so far????

This big award having been given in his own hands, accepted by Wilfy himself, cannot be the same as someone else receiving it for him whether it is in Kalangan or any other stage! Did you mean u would rather have the audience at Kalaangan happy for Wilfy receiving the award or is it that the actual recipient should be the one to feel proud?!

For me Mannadeek Wilfy Rebimbus and his United Youngsters group simply means is the other face of our great great KONKANI simply because Wilfy Bab, a pioneer of Konkani had a clear vision and Love for Konkani before half a century where not even anybody could dreamt about it and were non-existent.

Yes, Mand Sobhan was just a competitor to United Youngesters then, and now achieved remarkably for Konkani in this spirit. Had Edward Nazareth was then and now member of United Youngsters group he could of found clear differences beyond his imaginations between the two. I also take this opportunity to Thank each and every Konkani writers like Manndeek Victor Rodrigues, CGS ., other Konkani Music composers Melwin… for their daily contribution to our GREAT KONKANI MOTHER TONGUE. Yes, KONKANI .. WILFY.. JINDHABAD.

Your songs are mind blowing not only sweet, pleasant but also very educative and strongly recommended to do some soul searching in ourself. Totally agree with you Dr. Edward. Both Eric Bab and Wilfy Bab are true global faces of Konkani heritage. Their respective achievements are similar to what Sachin Tendulkar or Anil Kumble have achieved in cricket. Even if there are a few differences don''t we have differences at our own homes? Dear friends, let us simply cherish the commendable gestures from these two Konkani legends and learn something from it. Cheers.

It is the truth, no other organisation has contibuted to Konkani as much Mand Sobhan as. No other person has done to Konkani Music as much as Wilfy bab has. We have to salute both Eric Bab and Wilfy Bab for their contribution to Konkani
