Shoe hurled at BJP MP GVL Rao during press meet on Pragya Thakur

New Delhi, Apr 18 (IANS): A shoe was hurled on Thursday at Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MP and spokesperson G.V.L. Narasimha Rao, who blamed the Congress for the incident.

GVL Rao and other BJP leaders were addressing a press meet at the BJP headquarters here on the decision to name Sadhvi Pragya Singh Thakur as the party candidate from Bhopal when the man threw the shoe.

The attacker was caught immediately.

"This is a condemnable act by the Congress. This is yet another attempt by a Congress-inspired person who comes here to show the same kind of mentality," Rao said after the attack.

Subsequently, the Rajya Sabha member continued with the press conference.

It was not immediately known what prompted the person hurl the shoe. The accused identified himself as a doctor by profession, as per media reports.

The BJP has fielded Thakur as its candidate from Bhopal Lok Sabha seat against senior Congress leader Digvijaya Singh. Thakur is an accused in the Malegaon bomb blast case, which is being heard by a National Investigation Agency court. She is currently on bail.

GVL Rao deserves this for criticising the opposition. This is in fact the BJP culture of hurling shoes. When the BJP were in the opposition there many of such incidents. Now they are practicing to be in the opposition.

The graceful manner in which Mr George Bush (then President of USA) & Mr P Chidambaram (then Finance Minister) is in contrast with the way the BJP Spokesperson behaved. Accusing a party of instigating people to throw shoes speaks volumes of the cheap behaviour of BJP Spokesperson.
