Madikeri: Earth caves in at under-construction site - two perish

Madikeri, Nov 7: When people hired to dig a trench at an under construction site near Raja's Seat on new Extension Road in the town were doing this work, earth caved in, burying workers. During the rescue operation, mortal remains of two workers have been extricated from the spot so far.

The people who died in the incident have been identified as Gowramma and Yashoda. Another worker, Masha Bovi, who sustained serious injuries, stands shifted to a hospital.

Out of six workers working at the site, one of the workers, Padma, was buried neck deep in the debris. Her husband could rescue her before she faced further danger.

The people were working there for a person named Subbaiah. No safety measures were undertaken. Police circle inspector, Anoop Madappa, said that as per his information, a ten-foot deep trench was being dug for the purpose of laying foundation when the earth around the site caved in. "There were six workers doing this work. More details are yet to be collected," he stated.
