Mangaluru, Aug 17: Fun, music and frolic marked the culmination of ‘1947 Seconds for Freedom’, a unique show conducted by the APD foundation to celebrate Independence Day focusing on Freedom from pollution.

The two-day event featured performances by the young and dynamic band ‘Drum Maaro Drum’ led by Sanketh, Binoy, Zapo and Safwan, a street play by the students of KMC Mangaluru, a dance performance by the volunteers at the APD foundation and an interactive games session by RJ Sudeep alongside co-host Sushma Shetty.

The band performed songs like ‘The Kachra Song’ and ‘The MCC Song’, both of which aimed to bring forth the theme of not polluting the city and the surroundings. The students from KMC performed a street play, educating onlookers about the dangers of pollution. The volunteers from APD performed an improv-show which featured dance and mime acting, based on the theme of the fury of the Panchabootha.

The show was conducted at two prominent locations in the city, the KSRTC bus stand and Bharath Mall, and was well received by the patient onlookers. The people also took a pledge to protect their environment and stand up against people polluting the city.

“I used to think cleanliness is the government’s responsibility and not mine. But thanks to this event, I know that even small actions contribute to the larger problem,” said Ramesh, a resident of Gadag.

“At the APD Foundation, we have been trying to create awareness about pollution from the past four years, and we thought that the Independence Day was the best platform to highlight the issues we are facing, though we have freedom,” said the founder, Abdullah Rahman.

Partnering with the cause were Antony Waste Management, Mangaluru City Corporation, KSRTC Bus Stand, Bharath Mall, VSO – Kasturba Medical College, Mangaluru, jQuest and inDoodle Media. The organization stated that they have many more plans of such events in the future, and requested wholehearted public participation for the cause.
