Vasco da Gama sack coach Jorginho

Rio de Janeiro, Aug 14 (IANS): Former Bayern Munich and Brazil international full-back Jorginho has been sacked as coach of Vasco da Gama after just 10 games in charge.

The 53-year-old parted ways with the city based football club following a meeting with president Alexandre Campello late on Monday, Vasco said in a statement. Assistant coach Valdir Bigode will take over on an interim basis, reports Xinhua news agency.

The announcement came a day after the four-time Brazilian Serie A champions lost 0-1 to Palmeiras, a result that left them 15th in the league's 20-team standings.

Last week Vasco were eliminated from the continental Copa Sudamericana tournament following a 2-3 aggregate defeat to Ecuador's LDU Quito.

Jorginho guided Vasco to four wins, one draw and five losses after replacing Ze Ricardo in June.

He also coached the side in 2015 and 2016, when he led the club to the Rio state championship.

Capped 68 times for Brazil's national team, Jorginho's playing career included spells at Vasco, Sao Paulo, Fluminense, Flamengo, Bayer Leverkusen, Bayern Munich and Kashima Antlers.
