British Airways offloads Indian family after 3-year-old baby cries in airplane

New Delhi, Aug 9 (TOI): An Indian family has alleged that a leading European airline offloaded them from the flight because their three-year-old child was crying. While the child’s mother had managed to comfort the child when the plane was taxiing for takeoff, the allegedly intimidating behaviour of a cabin crew while asking the child to be seated scared the kid even more and then he started sobbing inconsolably.

The aircraft then returned to the terminal and the Indian family, along with a few other Indians seated behind them, were offloaded. This alleged racial behaviour took place on British Airways London-Berlin flight (BA 8495) of July 23 with a 1984 batch officer of Indian Engineering Services currently posted in the road transport ministry and his family.

The joint secretary-level officer has now complained to aviation minister Suresh Prabhu, alleging “humiliation and racial behaviour” by the airline. A British Airways spokesperson said: “We take such claims like this extremely seriously and do not tolerate discrimination of any kind. We have started a full investigation and are in direct contact with the customer.”

The officer’s letter to Prabhu says: “After security announcement for seat belt, my wife fastened the seat belt to my three-year-old baby... (Seated on a separate seat) my son felt uncomfortable and started crying. My wife managed to (comfort) him by taking him in her arms…. male crew member approached us and started shouting.. scolded my son to go to his seat...” “...My son got terrified and started crying (inconsolably). (An)other Indian family sitting behind us offered the child some biscuits to console him. My wife again put the boy on his designated seat and fastened the seat belt even though he kept on crying...,” the letter says.

The aircraft then started taxiing to the runway. “(The) same crew member came again and shouted at my son that ‘you bloody keep quiet otherwise you will be thrown out of the window’ and we would be offloaded. We were petrified,” it adds.

The plane then returned to the terminal. The officer says the crew member called in security personnel to the aircraft who took away their boarding cards and of those seated behind them. “My family and other Indian family, which had offered biscuits to my son, were offloaded….,” the complaint said.

The family then made its own arrangement to travel from London City airport to London. “…the crew member made racist remarks and used words like ‘bloody’ about Indians…. I request to have the matter investigated and take strictest possible action,” he concludes.

The family should have demanded A FULL REFUND and STOOD THIER GRUOND - Disembark
only after getting the refund in HARDCASH.

Any SANE PERSON can figure out a little child crying - usually for some or NO REASON.

The family is NOT AT FAULT - the Airline is!

I love the child and feel for the family.

Did any of you flew on a flight where there was a crying baby forget for 6 hrs at least on a 1 hr flight i am sure none of you guys maybe there will more or less 3 people over here. Now i will tell you'll about my own baby who was crying on the flight from BOM to BAH it was really really annoying so just imagine what would have been the condition on MUM/LON flight, could other passengers tolerate this kid's cry? not even the parents will tolerate.

Totally unacceptable! Child crying is a common scene in airplanes during take off and landing. Children do not like to be tied to a separate seat. But usually, air hostess seen pacifying such children with gift items etc and reduce their fear. Here, the so-called cabin crew behaved totally arrogant and uncivilized way, if the views mentioned by the complainant is true. If it is true, India should interfere to bring justice to this family. They have all the rights to sue for a good compensation from the British Airways and de-promote that crew to the baggage section.

I look at it differently ...
How and why they treated the concerned in the way they did and said at that time.
    Remember Chanakya's quotes...?
Treat your children as darlings till they are 5.
For the next 5 years scold them.
After 16 treat them as your friends.

This unfortunately is not followed. Studies in the West have revealed that many of the complexities relating to adulthood and mid age is the result of upbringing. Those children which are breast feed, hugged to the heart and are close to their parents never suffer complexes and become role models.
Here in a hurry to dump children into day care schools and other care taking agencies ,parents are trying their level best to ape the westerners. That's why Old Age homes have flourished here of late. You reap as you sow.
Remember our age to be admitted to KG ? It was 5.
In Indian culture, it's no secret that children are adored and pampered till they are at least 5. I am not talking for spoilt brats later.
Why 5?..because there is a belief that they are so innocent that God actually resides within them! After 5 we teach and they learn ...for the better or worse!
Now every baby cries when it takes birth and according to the wise ..it is so because they are not able to see the 'Divine' which had protected it thus far!
It longs for the company of the divine and that's why the outburst!!
It preserves it's Divine Instincts till 5!

Now you cannot blame a British Airline staff for not knowing!
And also the language if he has used it ....for that is how he has been brought up!
Talking of professionalism, these staff should have been taught how to behave in such circumstances...for such things may happen as an exception.

Critic, Mangalore. Isralites are probably one of the most decent lot I have come across, highly respectable. In business they are ruthless but not corrupt or cheaters. Ethiopians you are referring to, need to change their life style to the country they have embraced. You try the ghetto style of living, no one likes it. When you move to another country, live and adept to that countries culture. Don't enforce your culture on them as it happens in Canada, UK and several European countries.

I have travelled on British Airways several times. There are always exceptions and apparently, the air hostess in place of compassion, became ruthless. What they did was utterly condemnable and I am sure, he will get his punishment without fail. I faced racial profiling by my own people in the airport immigration counter in London rather than white skin - can you believe that? What I am trying to say here is, there are always exceptions.

We have no idea why the three-year-old baby was crying inconsolably in the aircraft in spite of the mother trying her best to calm down the child. But the flight attendant should not have shouted at the child and also used abusive words to the mother. The pilot of the British Airways did the right thing to bring the plane back to the terminal before takeoff. He did it for the safety of the child and others. The child, the mother, father, and other Indian families were offloaded from the aircraft for safety reasons. Anything could have happened after the plane too off.

I think these stupid Airways crew members does not have any KIDS or they hate Kids/humanbeings other than that of Britain based or born.... Kids below 5 yrs are normally have this tendency to retaliate to new situation - like travelling in a Bus, Train or Aeroplane for the first time.... Actually the Air hostess should have helped them to stop crying by giving some Chocolate/Ice cream or any Toy like object.... This is really foolish and in humane act by these un cultured British Airways Management... All Indians should boycot travelling by this aircraft.......

Being involved in the Aviation sector for over 2 decades, I can hardly believe the Airline offloaded 2 families only because a three- year old child was wailing during taxiing. There could be more to it than the news report suggests. Perhaps there was an altercation and exchange of harsh words between the Flight attendant and the family members. Or perhaps the mother refused to belt the child on his seat, which is mandatory during take-off and landing. Or perhaps the child was sick and not fit to travel. A full investigation will reveal the truth.
However, irrespective of the reason for their being offloaded, the Flight attendant’s usage of harsh words like ‘ Bloody” and “ throw you out of the window” are non parliamentary and uncalled for. If proven to be true, stringent action must be taken against the airline staff.

Considering the high responsibility of people safety in the air, BA did nothing wrong, Whether it is Indian kid or any, they have banned a family from flying their airline, because the parents who were holding their child... Let go... And the child started running in the aisle during landing...the plane had to take off because they could apply brakes... Do you think it is safe. @John Mangalore pillikula ,why do you say so without knowing Europeans personally?British people are still in their attitude of their old methods ,black and white, indians are not welcome in certain areas, hotels.otherwise rest of the world is more respectful to Indiens.you shouldnt compare times of your family and today .Things are changing and people have to adjust to it.when a child cries ,cabin crew has no reason to blame and abuse the child in a bad language. It doesnt understand the bloody word,They should have instead keep quiet.Of course rules are there.child must have got scared at their attitude.but why did they putout the other family too? They were not standing up or crying.Hope a thourough investigation will be made.
