Mangaluru: Mularpatna Bridge collapse - MP Nalin blames official apathy, sand mafia

Daijiworld Media Network - Mangaluru (SP)

Mangaluru, Jun 27: Dakshina Kannada MP, Nalin Kumar Kateel, said that Mularpatna Bridge happens to be the first bridge in coastal region to become victim of sand mafia. He also blamed official apathy for this disastrous development.

Nalin, speaking to media persons in the city on Tuesday June 26, said that the locals had sent report supported of video recording relating to damage caused by unscientific extraction of sand at the base of the bridge, crumbling of bridge pillars etc during the last two years to the officials. "Still the district administration failed to take steps to stop illegal sand mining there. Sand extraction continued unabated with the support and influence of people then in power. If the officials were unable to maintain the damaged bridge, they should have informed about it to the government in writing. Because of the negligence of the officials, people of the region have to face hardships for over two years," he angrily said.

Kateel said he had visited the spot along with local MLA and asked district administration and Mangalore Refinery and Petrochemicals Ltd to make temporary alternative arrangements for the people.

Kateel added that with the crashing of the bridge, the road to the hanging bridge across Phalguni River had become nonexistent and that the same has been restored. He said effort to provide connection by building culvert across a drain nearby is being made. Noting that tempos come to the starting point of the hanging bridge on the other side, he said once people cross the hanging bridge, arrangements have been made to transport them to different places by tempos.

Currently, buses having permits to move to Gurpur have to come back from there. All buses have to come till Mularpatna Bridge. The deputy commissioner has been asked to run two KSRTC buses from Mularpatna via Koltamajalu and Polali road, he explained.

Sitting MP Nalin from Mangalore is ruling since 9 years straight. Is he agreeing to the fact that he know the sand mafia is going on and he is unable to curb it till the bridge came down?

The bridge is gone. What is the contingency plan as an Member of Parliament who frequent himself to be seen only in 'Dharna' and 'Press conference'?

There are eight battalions of National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), for responding to disaster situations, under the control of the NDMA. If really worried for the suffering of the people who are dependent on this bridge other than compensation for Sangh Parivar caders he can ask Ministry of Defence for help to set up bridge that can be installed in few days.

Only few days this MP is giving statement of four lane roads which is only existing in the clouds. It is time to prove his individual capability.

Burning is easy than said. Now it is time to walk the talk.

Easy solution. Let him resign from MP (he can not do or speak anything in the Parliament anyway) and start building the bridge himself after falling at the feet of kalladka bhat and getting his blessings (by the way, I have seen a photo where he has done this in the middle of the road). He has lot of experience (probabaly the only experience he has) of erecting shamianas for nagamandalas and bajrang dal meetings. If he does not take up such activities, he might start doing what he threatened that he will do, i.e. start fires and burn dakshina kannada!

SEZ agency whish supplies water from AMR water dam in Bantwal dug up the place near the pillars of the bridge to lay pipeline. There was a huge leak in the pipeline later. The high pressure water washed up huge amount of sand and mud from the place as well.

Our Country (Top to bottom) are preoccupied with blame game.
Indira Gandhi died 40 years back and Modi & full team members are still in parranio of those emergency era. Any thing and everything pertaining to present peiod is due to congress rule of 70 years. Then why people have chosen BJP ? Admit publicly if your not capable of correcting previous mistakes.

Was the foundation laid on sand that the bridge should collapse? Why blame sand mining as the cause of this disaster? Quality of some of our bridges is that we need to be prepared for the worst once we place our foot on it.

Depends on to what depth the earth was dug and piles driven to pour concrete to construct the pillars. If the pillars were started say.. six feet below the existing ground, obviously carving around it for sand or erosion due to flowing water will weaken the soil around the pillar ? How can such a long bridge stand all by itself when the pillars give way ?

Investigate the reports made by the locals and find out whose dredging equipments were used for extracting sand. Penalize them heavily because they have anyway filled their coffers by sand smuggling, putting at risk public safety and damaging public property.
