Udupi, Apr 26: “The power of intelligence and sentimental temperament are the primary aspects for an all round development of a person. Playing chess helps in the evolution of intelligence, restraint, patience and logical planning. Growing children should be encouraged to play chess,” said international chess trainer Derick Pinto. He spoke after inaugurating the Karnataka state level floodlt chess tournaments at Vakwadi Gurukul School here. Bandya Education Institute founder Basruru Appanna Hegde chaired the programme.
Karnataka's first international grandmaster Tejkumar M S inaugurated attractive prizes and certificates after pulling the traditional pulley and explained his experience in playing chess. Chinmayi Hospital director, Dr Umesh Putran who arrived as the chief guest for the prize distribution programme spoke on chess and science and commended the programme by Gurukula Institute.
More than 300 players participated in the tournaments held separately for under 8 years, under 10, under 12, under 15 and open categories. Vasanth B H conducted the tournaments smoothly and announced the names of the winners. Karnataka Chess Association secretary Arvind Shastri was present as guest for the prize distribution.

Gurukula Institute joint executive K Subhaschandra Shetty and Anupama S Shetty were present. They appreciated the enthusiasm of the students in playing chess and distributed prizes and certificates to the winners. Well known R J Nayana Shetty compered the programme. Gurukula Institute joint executive thanked Kashwi Chess Kundapur who helped to make the programme a success and UKCA as well as Udupi District Chess Association who encouraged them.
